Bangkok Bites: The Hidden Thai Spot in Queenstown Worth Visiting

As more neighbourhood Thai eateries pop up across Singapore, it is getting increasingly convenient to satisfy Thai food cravings without hopping on a flight to Bangkok. Bangkok Bites is located along Strathmore Avenue, right within the heart of the Queenstown estate. Despite being around for some time, it still flies relatively under the radar, quietly drawing regulars through word of mouth rather than social media hype.

The space is casual and fuss free, with simple furnishings and a comfortable, laid back atmosphere. It feels like the kind of place you come to for a relaxed dinner with family or friends.

Here is what I tried.

We began with the Fried Egg, served as a standalone dish. It is fully fried in Thai style, with beautifully crisp, lacy edges and a firm golden centre. It may sound simple, but it was deeply satisfying, especially when paired with rice and the richer dishes on the table.

One of the more interesting plates was the Monkey Head Mushroom. The texture is unique, slightly fibrous and almost meat like, giving it a surprisingly hearty bite. It soaked up the sauce well and had a savoury depth that made it more than just a typical vegetable option.

The Thai Style Kangkong was also well executed, retaining a pleasant crunch while carrying enough seasoning and wok fragrance to keep it flavourful.

For a more substantial option, the Basil Pork Rice with Egg delivered classic Thai comfort. The minced pork was fragrant from the basil, savoury with a mild kick, and paired naturally with rice.

The Thai Prawn Cake, recommended by the boss, is a must try. Handmade and prepared fresh, it had a crisp exterior and a juicy interior packed with prawn filling. It did not taste overly processed, and the freshness came through clearly.

The Pad Thai was well executed, with springy rice noodles coated evenly in a savoury, sweet and lightly tangy sauce. It had that familiar wok fragrance and a good balance of flavours without leaning overly sweet.

Another boss recommendation was the Curry Crayfish. This dish had an interesting flavour profile that leaned rich and aromatic but was not spicy. That makes it approachable even for those who prefer milder curries. The crayfish was fresh and meaty, and the sauce was ample enough to spoon generously over rice.

The Green Curry, which was also recommended to us, turned out to be one of my favourite dishes. I liked that it was not just a thin curry with a few random ingredients thrown in. It came properly loaded with tender pieces of meat and eggplant, all simmered in a creamy coconut gravy infused with green curry paste and Thai basil.

We had to try the fan favourite Moo Ping too. The skewers were juicy and lightly caramelised on the outside, with a subtle smoky char that brought out the natural sweetness of the marinated pork. Each bite was tender, well seasoned and packed with flavour.

For drinks, we tried the Thai Milk Tea, Thai Green Tea and Lemongrass drink. The Thai Milk Tea had a distinct tea flavour coming through clearly instead of tasting watered down. The Thai Green Tea was lighter and more refreshing, with a floral fragrance that made it easy to sip between bites of the richer dishes. The Lemongrass drink was the standout for me. It was especially aromatic, with a bright citrusy note and a pleasant natural sweetness that made it incredibly refreshing. It cut through the heavier flavours on the table nicely and felt very satisfying on a warm day.
