The English language iteration of Toy Factory Productions hit musical Moonlit City ((城里的月光) is now showing at the Victoria Theatre:
Following its widely successful Mandarin debut last year which saw over 7,000 combined attendees, this refreshed production promises a much larger ensemble, exquisite new costumes, and entirely reimagined musical arrangements.
Directed by Cultural Medallion recipient Goh Boon Teck, the musical continues to pull back the curtain on the private world of Singapore founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his wife Kwa Geok Choo. Rather than a dry retelling of political milestones, the play offers an intimate look at their enduring partnership, quiet sacrifices, and the emotional heartbeat that helped shape the modern nation we know today.
We caught the opening night performance last Friday and appreciated that it was not just a simple revival or a direct word for word translation of the Mandarin original. The creative team has meticulously refined the storytelling to cater to a much broader global audience.
Playwright Jedidiah Huang and vocal arranger Elaine Chan faced the daunting task of adapting classic beloved tracks by celebrated Singaporean composer Tan Kah Beng into English for the very first time. For long time fans of the original Mandarin pop hits like Moonlight in the City, The Sun After the Rain and Aroma, you may still feel that the melodies resonate better in their original Chinese phrasing like for me too.

Nonetheless, the English lyrics are thoughtfully crafted and gracefully executed. This bold creative choice successfully achieves the director vision of making this poignant chapter of Singapore history accessible to a wider demographic, including younger generations and non Mandarin speaking theatre-goers.
The performances anchor the emotional weight of the production beautifully.
Acclaimed baritone Alvin Julian Tan delivers a commanding yet tender portrayal of Lee Kuan Yew. Tan effectively sheds the familiar steely political resolve often associated with the leader to reveal a devoted partner navigating the tumultuous early years of a young nation, including their courtship days at Raffles College and the harrowing survival period during the Japanese Occupation.

Opposite him, Sunny Yang reprises her role as Kwa Geok Choo. Yang performance well captures Kwa quiet emotional strength and reminding audiences of her formidable presence as a brilliant conveyancing lawyer and a stable pillar of support. The play powerfully portrays Kwa Geok Choo not just as a dutiful wife but as a charismatic and pivotal force in her own right, highlighting the often overlooked contributions of women in male dominated historical narratives.

The inclusion of international talents like Indonesian musical theatre actor Robertus Darren Radyan also adds a wonderful new dynamic to the expanded cast, joining others like Joel Low who plays Lee Hsien Loong.

Visually, the production seeks to transport the audience into the charm of 1950s Singapore. The vintage aesthetics are well done, featuring tailored qipaos and structured suits that reflect the understated sophistication of the era. The enhanced stage design juxtaposes the solemnity of a rapidly developing city with the soft romantic glow of moonlight, creating a stunning backdrop for the private emotional exchanges that history books typically leave out.

Music director Benny Wong breathes fresh life into the classic tunes, even introducing an entirely new original song titled One Mountain Two Tigers specifically composed to elevate the dramatic tension of the English script.
Overall, Moonlit City succeeds in humanising two extraordinary individuals whose love story blossomed beneath the heavy weight of destiny. It is a gentle, sentimental, and accessible musical that combines historical resilience with personal devotion.

Seeing a softer, more vulnerable portrayal of our founding father reminds us that behind every great nation are human beings who experience love, fear, and familial loyalty just like the rest of us. Whether you are a fan of classic local melodies, intrigued by the early days of Singapore, or simply looking for a beautifully told romance, this compelling production offers a memorable evening out.
The musical runs until 30 August at Victoria Theatre.
