The Singapore production arrives in a city with its own history with Michael Jackson. The pop star performed two sold out concerts in Singapore during his Dangerous World Tour in 1993. The musical is set against the backdrop of that period in his career and combines his biggest hits with choreography and theatrical design.
More than 8 million people have experienced MJ through productions on Broadway, London’s West End, Hamburg, as well as tours across the United States and Australia. The Singapore season marks another stop for the international production.
Featuring more than 25 Michael Jackson hits, including Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Man in the Mirror and Thriller, the musical takes audiences behind the scenes of the creation of the Dangerous World Tour.
Set in 1992, the story follows Jackson as he works to bring his vision for the tour from concept to stage. The production presents a behind the scenes perspective through the lens of an MTV journalist who is given rare access to the rehearsal room. Written by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, whose works include Ruined and Sweat, the musical explores key moments in Jackson’s artistic journey and the creative collaboration behind his performances.
MJ has received international recognition for its choreography and theatrical production, winning four Tony Awards, including Best Choreography for creator and director Christopher Wheeldon OBE. Wheeldon also received the Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreography for the West End production.
The musical’s creative team includes Scenic Design by Tony Award and two-time Emmy Award winner Derek McLane, known for Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Lighting Design by six-time Tony Award winner Natasha Katz, Costume Design by Tony, Emmy and Academy Award winner Paul Tazewell, known for Hamilton and Wicked, and Sound Design by Tony Award and Olivier Award winner Gareth Owen, known for Come From Away.
The team also features Projection Design by two-time Tony Award nominee Peter Nigrini, Hair and Wig Design by two-time Emmy Award nominee Charles LaPointe, Make up Design by Joe Dulude II, Musical Supervision by Tony Award nominee David Holcenberg, and Orchestrations and Arrangements by Holcenberg and Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb.
