Back in 2019, we reviewed the original Ready or Not and praised it as the perfect dark comedy antithesis to the glossy wealth seen in Crazy Rich Asians.
Referencing global wealth inequality reports at the time, we loved how the movie served as a brilliant satire about the top one percent making literal pacts with the devil to maintain their status. Given how that first film ended in a spontaneous combustion bloodbath with only the bride surviving, a sequel seemed highly unlikely. Yet, directors Matt Bettinelli Olpin and Tyler Gillett have returned after a seven year gap with Ready or Not 2: Here I Come:
I enjoyed the original thoroughly and I can confess that I love this second installment just as much.
It takes everything that worked in the first movie and amplifies it to deliver a bigger, badder, and crazier experience. In fact, it is easily one of the most entertaining movies I have watched this year alongside Disney’s Hoppers.
The story picks up directly where the 2019 sleeper hit left off.
Heroine Grace, played flawlessly once again by scream queen Samara Weaving, finds herself whisked away from the ruined Le Domas estate to a hospital bed. After a quick exposition dump to a baffled detective, the plot wastes no time throwing Grace back into the fire.
We learn through an expanded mythology that the Le Domas family was merely one faction in a massive capitalist Satanic cult. By surviving her wedding night and wiping out an entire bloodline, Grace triggered a bizarre bylaw in their demonic pact. She now has a chance to claim the throne of the ultimate puppet master, Chester Danforth, played brilliantly in a brief cameo by David Cronenberg. Chester is so powerful he can pause global wars with a casual phone call. However, claiming his spot means surviving a double or nothing hunt against multiple powerful families all vying for global supremacy.
A very clever addition to this high stakes game is Grace’s estranged sister Faith, played by Kathryn Newton.
The two of them are drugged and dropped into a sprawling Danforth estate to be hunted by an eccentric cast of billionaires. The chemistry between Weaving and Newton is fantastic, grounding the absolute madness unfolding around them with a fractured but believable sibling dynamic.
Weaving continues to shine, oscillating perfectly between desperate survivalist and rage filled warrior. The supporting cast is equally packed with millennial nostalgia and incredible talent.
Elijah Wood is wonderful as the smirking lawyer and consigliere laying down the complicated rules of engagement. Meanwhile, horror icons like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Shawn Hatosy play the ruthless Danforth twins.
On the slasher film side of the movie DNA, the budget increase is very apparent in the inventively gruesome set pieces. There is a deeply memorable death by industrial washing machine, and the dark humour kill scenes are amusing spectacles that draw you the edge of your seats. The directing duo knows exactly how to balance pitch black comedy with intense action. You will find yourself laughing nervously one moment and shocked by the brutality the next. I can confidently say I will never feel the same way again listening to the classic soft rock ballad Total Eclipse of the Heart after witnessing the chaotic fight scene it scores here.
Ultimately, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come understands its strongest asset is the audience’s desire to watch unapologetic capitalist monsters get their comeuppance. It safely doubles down on the rich people suck messaging but keeps the proceedings fast paced, mean, and incredibly fun. While it does rely on a bit more exposition than the sleek original, the trade off gives us a richer background and a much wilder ride that takes a chainsaw to generational wealth. It is a blood soaked and crowd pleasing sequel that manages to be a worthy successor.
