[Review] Medusa Osteria Romana Brings a Very Red and Very Loud Slice of 1960s Rome to Singapore

Singapore has a brand new dining destination that promises to whisk you straight to the colourful streets of 1960s Rome. Located at South Beach Avenue near JW Marriott Hotel, Medusa is the latest concept by Fortuna Group and officially the very first Osteria Romana in the country.

From the moment you step through the entryway foyer, the ambiance is amazing.

The space is unapologetically very red and loud, bathed in the glow of dazzling LED lights and decorated with cheeky vintage portraits. It is incredibly photogenic, making it a great place for photos whether you are relaxing in the cozy outdoor area or soaking in the lively energy of the main dining room.

While the stunning visual appeal is enough to draw a crowd, the hospitality ensures you want to stay. The service we experienced was attentive and friendly, perfectly embodying the relaxed yet sophisticated charm that General Manager Federico Burci brings to the floor. This welcoming approach makes it easy to settle in for a feast of bold and hearty Roman cuisine steered by Head Chef Federico Scordo.

We were invited for a dinner tasting and started our culinary adventure with the Ravioli ($38).

Medusa’s Ravioli

The delicate pasta parcels were generously stuffed with spinach and ricotta, swimming in a rich and luscious prawn and tomato bisque finished with butter. It was elevated by the addition of fresh prawn tartare, basil oil, and a touch of dill, creating a balance of creamy herbaceous and oceanic notes.

Next came the Roman Salami pizza ($36), part of Medusa’s Roman style pizza selection. Unlike the thicker Neapolitan style commonly found around Singapore, Roman pizza is thinner and crispier, focusing on crunch and balance rather than chewiness. This version was topped with San Marzano tomato, Fior di Latte, spicy salame and nduja. The result was bold and satisfying, with the spicy cured meats adding a punchy kick that paired well with the lightly charred crust.

Every bite was an explosion of savoury and spicy goodness.

The Pollo ($36) offered something heartier. A juicy chicken breast was served with red peppers, Taggiasche olives, capers, basil and tomato sauce. The Mediterranean flavours worked beautifully together. The olives and capers brought a briny sharpness that goes well with the uber tender chicken, while the tomato sauce tied everything together with a comforting, home style feel.

Medusa’s Pollo

Overall, Medusa’s appeal is how it presents traditional cooking style with a lively social atmosphere. It is not the sort of quiet, candlelit Italian restaurant designed for hushed conversations. Instead, it feels like a celebration of Roman dining culture where food, drinks and conversation all compete for attention in the best way possible. Great for social dinners with a large group of friends or family.
