South Africa Woos Singapore Travellers and Investors with Growing Tourism Appeal

Tourism from Singapore to South Africa is on the rise, driven by a strong mix of leisure travel and business events under the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) segment. In 2025, leisure travellers made up the majority of visitors from Singapore, with total arrivals increasing by 4.7 percent compared to 2024.

South Africa also celebrated a record-breaking tourism year in 2025, welcoming 10.48 million international visitors between January and December. Of these, more than 9,827 arrivals came from Singapore. Spending by Singaporean tourists remained resilient, averaging R26,393 in the first half of 2025, close to pre-pandemic levels of R27,137 (approximately SGD 2,149.37) recorded in 2019. This steady spend underscores South Africa’s position as a value-for-money long-haul destination.

Speaking at a media briefing in Singapore on 2 February 2026, held as part of her Southeast Asia outreach visit, South Africa’s Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille highlighted new and upcoming attractions designed to appeal to regional travellers.

Among the standout developments is the Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre, home to the discovery of the world’s oldest dinosaur embryo. Since opening in June last year, the centre has drawn over 80,000 visitors, strengthening South Africa’s appeal for educational and heritage tourism.

Luxury hospitality is also expanding in the region. French resort brand Club Med is set to open its first Southern African property in June this year, located along the warm coastline of KwaZulu-Natal. The new resort is expected to further boost the country’s attractiveness among premium leisure travellers.

South Africa is likewise raising its global profile in sports tourism. The LIV Golf tournament will make its debut at Steyn City next month, while the country prepares to host the Cricket World Cup next year. Following the successful G20 Leaders’ Summit last year, South Africa will also host a Special Meeting of the World Economic Forum in 2027, only the second time such a meeting will be held in the forum’s history.

Travel between Singapore and South Africa remains convenient, with Singapore passport holders enjoying visa-free access. In addition, the rollout of South Africa’s Electronic Travel Visa authorisation system, capable of processing applications within 24 hours or less, will streamline entry for travellers from countries such as China, India, and Indonesia.

Beyond tourism promotion, Minister de Lille’s visit focused on strengthening bilateral ties. During her stay in Singapore, she and her delegation met with key officials from the Ministry of National Development, the Singapore Tourism Board, and Changi Airport Group to deepen trade and tourism collaboration. Meetings were also held with investment groups, where several tourism infrastructure projects were presented.

In 2025, South Africa’s Department of Tourism launched its Tourism Infrastructure Investment Summit, unveiling eight bankable projects. Investors have been invited to participate in the second instalment of the summit, scheduled for September 2026.

Minister de Lille’s Southeast Asia outreach programme continues in Malaysia and will conclude in Indonesia, where South Africa will participate in the ASTINDO Travel Fair on 6 February 2026, further strengthening its engagement with the region.
