Google Strengthens Online Safety for Youths in Singapore with New Age Assurance Features

Google is taking a major step toward enhancing online safety for young users in Singapore with the introduction of age assurance solutions across its products, set to roll out in the first quarter of 2026. Announced at the Safer with Google event, graced by Minister of State for Digital Development and Information, Madam Rahayu Mahzam, this initiative aims to provide more age-appropriate digital experiences and greater protection for users under 18.

The announcement follows findings from an MDDI survey revealing that parents remain concerned about online risks such as exposure to inappropriate content, with many calling for more effective tools to safeguard children’s online activities.

Smarter Protections Through Age Estimation

Google’s new age assurance technology uses a machine learning model that interprets multiple account-related signals, such as search behaviour and video preferences, to estimate a user’s age. If the system determines that a user is under 18, specific safety features will be automatically activated, including:

  • Google Maps: Disabling the Timeline feature.
  • Google Play: Blocking access to apps restricted to adults.
  • Google Search: Enabling SafeSearch by default.
  • YouTube: Turning on digital wellbeing tools like “take a break” reminders and bedtime prompts, while adding safeguards to content recommendations.

Users estimated to be under 18 will receive notifications explaining these changes and guidance on verifying their age if they wish to adjust their settings. Adults incorrectly identified as minors can verify their age by uploading a photo ID or selfie for review.

A Holistic Approach to Family Safety

This new feature complements Google’s existing suite of family safety tools, such as Family Link, which allows parents to monitor their child’s account activity and set screen time limits; the supervised experience on YouTube, offering curated content settings; and Be Internet Awesome, a programme that teaches kids safe and responsible online habits.

Empowering Creators to Tackle Online Harms

Reinforcing its commitment to digital wellbeing, Google also announced the fourth edition of YouTube Creators for Impact: a campaign designed to raise awareness of online harms such as cyberbullying and harassment. This year’s programme will feature six local “Impact Creators”: Alderic, Avi Dixit, Jamie Lim Yin Yin, Lingyi from Wah!Banana, Mathilda Huang, and Ryan from Overkill Singapore.

Through expert-led workshops and discussion sessions, these creators will gain insights into online safety issues and produce impactful content to educate and empower their audiences.
