McDonald’s Singapore Retires Plastic Cutlery in a Major Sustainability Move

McDonald’s Singapore has officially said goodbye to its iconic plastic cutlery, marking a significant milestone in its journey toward sustainability. In a heartfelt farewell, the brand announced that its plastic forks, spoons, and knives have “retired,” making way for eco-friendly wooden alternatives.

As of December 2024, all McDonald’s outlets in Singapore have completed the transition to wooden cutlery following a phased rollout that began in October 2024. This change underscores the brand’s commitment to reducing environmental impact and supporting a greener future.

A Step Toward Sustainability

The shift to wooden cutlery is expected to eliminate 26 million plastic utensils annually, equating to approximately 250,000 kilograms of plastic waste—the weight of 125 electric cars.

This is part of McDonald’s broader sustainability efforts, which include:

  • Strawless Lids (2021): Saving over 57 million plastic straws each year.
  • Eco-Friendly Packaging (2024): Introducing paper salad containers and bio-based, renewable linings for food wrappers.

Looking Ahead

McDonald’s Singapore plans to roll out even more green initiatives in 2025, aligning with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, which aims to reduce waste and foster a circular economy.
