Instagram has announced a major expansion of its teen safety framework in Singapore, introducing an updated 13+ content rating system and a new “Limited Content” setting designed to better align teen experiences with age-appropriate media standards such as film ratings.
The changes aim to ensure that users under 18 see content similar to what would be appropriate in a 13+ rated movie, while giving parents more control over their teens’ online experience.
Under the updated system, all users under 18 in Singapore will be automatically placed into a revised 13+ content setting.
This setting cannot be turned off without parental permission, meaning teens will default to a more restricted content environment that filters out material considered unsuitable for their age group.
Instagram said that while teens may still occasionally encounter suggestive content or strong language, similar to what might appear in a 13+ movie, such instances will be actively minimised.
Instagram has updated its teen content guidelines by benchmarking them against widely recognised movie rating standards for ages 13+.
In addition to existing restrictions on sexually suggestive content, graphic imagery, and adult products such as alcohol and tobacco, the platform will now also limit or stop recommending:
The company says the changes reflect feedback from parents and aim to make teen experiences safer and more consistent.
Instagram is also rolling out improved detection systems to proactively identify and restrict inappropriate content across the platform.
Account-Level Restrictions
Search protections are being expanded beyond existing sensitive topics such as self-harm and eating disorders.
New restrictions will block results for mature terms like “alcohol” or “gore,” including attempts to bypass filters through misspellings.
Content that violates updated teen guidelines will no longer appear in:
Even if posted by accounts teens follow, such content will be filtered out. Additionally, links to restricted content sent via direct messages will not open.
Instagram has also updated its AI features for teens, aligning responses with the same 13+ movie-rating-inspired standards. AI systems will be prevented from generating responses that are deemed inappropriate for younger users.
Recognising that some families may prefer even stricter controls, Instagram is introducing a new optional setting called Limited Content.
This mode provides a tighter filtering system than the default 13+ experience and removes the ability for teens to:
The feature is designed for parents seeking additional oversight beyond the standard teen protections.
Instagram confirmed that the updated teen safety features are already being rolled out gradually to users in Singapore and will become fully available in the coming months.
