The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) commemorated its 200th anniversary in grand fashion with a Bicentennial Charity Gala Dinner held on 7 February 2026 at the club’s Nautica Ballroom. The landmark celebration, graced by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, brought together more than 130 guests including members, sponsors and distinguished personalities, raising an impressive S$326,692 in support of The President’s Challenge 2026.
Founded in 1826, RSYC stands as one of Singapore’s oldest institutions, with a legacy deeply intertwined with the nation’s maritime history. The bicentennial gala paid tribute to this rich heritage, reflecting on the club’s evolution from its colonial-era beginnings to a distinctly Singaporean and multicultural institution rooted in service and fellowship.
The evening opened with a commemorative bicentennial tribute video, followed by welcome remarks from RSYC Commodore Mr Balakrishnan B. In a symbolic highlight of the night, President Tharman officiated the unveiling of the RSYC Bicentennial Plaque and led the ceremonial cake-cutting. He was joined by Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for Education and MP for West Coast–Jurong West GRC, along with members of the RSYC Committee.
The gala also marked the official launch of RSYC’s year-long bicentennial programme, which will feature a series of sporting and social activities throughout 2026 aimed at strengthening member engagement and community bonds.
A key highlight of the evening was the charity auction, which featured an exclusive line-up of rare collectibles. Among the standout items were a one-of-a-kind RSYC Bicentennial Commemorative Pure Gold Coin, limited-edition Bicentennial Pure Silver Coins, and a rare 60-year-old Martell Cognac, one of only 12 bottles in the world, presented in a Baccarat crystal decanter.
All proceeds from the gala dinner and auction were directed to The President’s Challenge 2026. Launched in 2000 by RSYC’s former Patron, the late President S R Nathan, the President’s Challenge is a national movement that rallies Singaporeans to build a more caring and cohesive society while supporting communities in need.
A cheque presentation ceremony was held in the presence of President Tharman, Mr Desmond Lee, Commodore Balakrishnan and members of the RSYC Committee. Guests also enjoyed a post-dinner heritage exhibition showcasing key milestones from the club’s distinguished 200-year journey. As a commemorative keepsake, attendees received a specially produced gold-plated RSYC Bicentennial coin.
The Bicentennial Charity Gala sets the stage for a packed calendar of celebratory events throughout 2026 under the banner of #RSYC200. Highlights include:
