ASICS and MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO (MDS) are joining forces for the first time with the launch of HYPER TAPING™, a new collaborative footwear project set to debut in January 2026 as part of the Spring/Summer 2026 season. The highly anticipated sneakers will be available from January 22, 2026, at asics.com, selected ASICS stores, ISSEY MIYAKE outlets, and select retailers worldwide.
The partnership brings together two iconic Japanese brands that share a deep-rooted commitment to innovation, craftsmanship and technological excellence. Built on years of mutual respect and trust developed through creating products in Japan, the collaboration reflects a shared philosophy that blends function, design and forward-thinking craftsmanship.
Guided by ASICS’ founding principle, “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body,” the brand has long focused on integrating advanced function with refined design through extensive research into human movement and biomechanics at the ASICS Institute of Sport Science. For HYPER TAPING, the MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO team worked closely with ASICS to study the structure and movement of the human foot, developing a shoe that introduces a fresh perspective on everyday footwear while exploring long-term possibilities in design and performance.
The result is a sneaker that reflects the strengths of both teams, balancing technical precision with expressive design.
First unveiled at Paris Fashion Week Men’s during the IM MEN Spring/Summer 2026 show, HYPER TAPING takes inspiration from one of ASICS’ most recognisable design elements, the ASICS Stripes. MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO reconstructed this iconic motif into the concept of “taping,” a technique that stabilises the body and supports natural movement.
This idea is translated directly into the shoe’s form, elevating taping from a functional reference into a bold design expression. From the use of a wrestling outsole to a redesigned insole optimised for daily comfort, every element was refined to create footwear that feels innovative yet timeless in its universality.
At the heart of the design is a distinctive taping-inspired structure, expressed through thick, original elastic bands that wrap around the foot in a striking visual line. Cushioned tongue wings and carefully adjusted ankle contact further enhance fit, stability and comfort, creating a secure yet flexible wearing experience.
HYPER TAPING is the first model to reinterpret an ASICS wrestling shoe into a lifestyle sneaker. The wrestling outsole extends into the lower part of the upper, delivering a secure hold and stable feel while evoking the gripping structure of a gecko’s foot. This design approach offers both strong traction and a visually distinctive silhouette.
To ensure comfort for extended daily wear, ASICS developed a new foot-shaped mold, or “last,” by widening the traditionally narrow wrestling outsole. This is paired with a responsive FLYTEFOAM PROPEL insole and a soft Ortholite sock liner, providing cushioning and support despite the shoe’s slim sole profile.
The upper features a mix of premium leather and mesh, designed to transition effortlessly across different lifestyles and settings.
Retailing at USD 220, HYPER TAPING will be available in three colourways: Black/Black, Gray/Gray and Green/Blue, including a signature fluorescent green option that adds a bold, contemporary edge.
