The 2024 MTV EMAs celebrated music’s biggest stars, with Taylor Swift emerging as the night’s biggest winner. Swift took home awards for Best Video for her hit “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone, alongside trophies for Best Artist, Best Live, and Best US Act. Joining Swift in the spotlight, Tyla, a first-time EMA nominee, scored wins for Best Afrobeats, Best R&B, and Best African Act.
Host Rita Ora, returning for the third time, dazzled audiences with a nod to Manchester’s music legacy. Performing from “Rita’s Bar,” set against a lively backdrop overlooking thousands of fans, she brought energy and emotion to the evening, including a heartfelt tribute to Liam Payne.
Several artists also marked career milestones with their first EMA wins: Benson Boone took Best New, LE SSERAFIM won Best Push, and Peso Pluma celebrated a Best Latin win, continuing his winning streak from last year.
The night was packed with stellar performances, opening with Benson Boone suspended above the crowd on a golden grand piano for a medley of “Slow It Down” and “Beautiful Things.” Tyla delivered a show-stopping performance of “Push 2 Start,” captivating the audience in shimmering body paint. Meanwhile, Mexican rock band The Warning brought fire and intensity with their performance of “Automatic Sun.”
Other highlights included RAYE, who delivered a stunning rendition of her hits with a powerful choir and live band, and Shawn Mendes, who enchanted fans with a soulful, intimate set illuminated by dramatic lighting. Mendes also took home the award for Best Canadian Act.
In one of the night’s most anticipated segments, hip-hop icon Busta Rhymes received the Global Icon Award and delivered a high-energy medley, joined by dancers wearing dragon headgear and a towering dragon visual.
K-pop sensation LE SSERAFIM wowed with a thunderous performance of “Chasing Lightning” and “CRAZY,” complete with incredible choreography against a stormy backdrop. Peso Pluma surprised the crowd with collaborator Estevan Plazola for a unique drummer-less performance of “Hollywood.”
The night concluded with a landmark performance by the Pet Shop Boys, recipients of the first-ever MTV EMA Pop Pioneer award. Joined by Manchester’s Camerata string ensemble, they delivered a visually stunning tribute, performing Bowie’s “All The Young Dudes” and celebrating 40 years of their anthem “West End Girls.”
