The Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) has set the stage for a vibrant showcase of our local Chinese culture with the commencement of the annual Cultural Extravaganza on 8th May 2024. At the heart of the festivities was the prestigious Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award, conferred upon deserving recipients in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the enrichment of our cultural landscape.
The event, graced by Guest-of-Honour Ms Low Yen Ling, Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth & Trade and Industry, applauded the tireless efforts of the SCCC in championing our cultural heritage. Minister Low presented this year’s Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award (SCCCA) to two exemplary recipients: Mdm Yan Choong Lian, Founder and Artistic Director of Dance Ensemble Singapore (DES), and Nine Years Theatre in the Organisation category.
Mdm Yan and DES were lauded for their relentless pursuit of dance innovation, weaving together the diverse threads of Singapore’s cultural tapestry. Meanwhile, Nine Years Theatre, a cornerstone of Singapore’s Mandarin theatre scene, was recognized for its culturally resonant productions that transcend boundaries and resonate with audiences from all walks of life.
The opening show of this year’s Cultural Extravaganza, “The Pawned Wife”, presented by Nam Hwa Opera, enthralled over 200 representatives from the local Chinese arts and cultural community. This captivating performance set the tone for a series of original productions and creative reinterpretations showcased throughout CE 2024.
Under the theme of “(Re)presenting Our SINGAPO人 Treasures”, CE 2024 promises a captivating array of theatrical performances, exhibitions, and concerts by talented local artists and arts groups. From 8th May to 30th June 2024, audiences can immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of our cultural heritage.
Looking ahead, nominations for next year’s SCCCA are now open to the public. From now until 30th September 2024, individuals are encouraged to nominate deserving candidates for the Award. Detailed criteria for both the Individual and Organisation categories can be found on the SCCCA website.
