[Review] Sip Nostalgia at Great Nanyang (大南洋) Heritage Cafe, the Latest F&B Concept by Founder of Yang Ming Seafood

Singapore has caught on the nostalgia wave and this has permeated the local F&B scene lately. Great Nanyang (大南洋), is one of the latest addition to the Singapore culinary landscape, offering a delightful journey back in time to the kopitams of old Malaysia and Singapore.

Keith Kang, founder of Yang Ming Seafood and Great Nanyang

Founded by Keith Kang, the visionary behind the popular Yang Ming Seafood, famous for its lobster chee cheong fun, this charming kopitiam concept captures the essence of a bygone era with its nostalgic ambiance and a menu that pays homage to the flavours of yesteryears.

Sip Nostalgia

Great Nanyang welcomes you with the comforting aroma of kopi and teh (coffee and tea), just like our grandparents used to enjoy in the golden age of Malaysia and Singapore. The menu is a heartfelt compilation of Keith’s cherished memories, blending the best of both countries. We were invited for a dinner tasting and sampled a wide array of heritage hawker dishes that left us craving for more.

While Yang Ming Seafood focuses on premium ingredients like lobsters and fresh seafood at wallet-friendly prices in a casual dining environment, Great Nanyang, however, takes a different approach, focusing on the simple pleasures of morning pick-me-ups and afternoon tea delights. Homely, comfort food dominates the menu here.

Flavours of Old Nanyang

One of the standout dishes at Great Nanyang is the Signature Hainanese Chicken Cutlet ($15.90). This beloved classic has been perfected to meet Keith’s exacting standards, featuring a special sauce crafted from premium butter and fragrant pandan leaves, among other secret ingredients.

In fact, Keith tasted over 20 renditions of Hainanese Chicken Chops island-wide before coming up with the rendition for Great Nanyang.

For those who crave a hearty breakfast, the Nasi Lemak Kukus ($8.90) is a must-try. Fragrant coconut rice served with a choice of delectable add-ons like Chicken Berempah Leg, Curry Chicken, Sambal Petai Prawn, or Rendang Mutton, it features a symphony of flavours that pays homage to Malaysia and Singapore’s shared culinary heritage.

If noodles are your preference, the Dry Mee Siam ($8.90) is an iconic breakfast option. Made with mihun noodles and a secret sauce of 13 herbs and spices, it is a delightful dish that can be paired with various proteins, including the flavourful Sambal Prawn Petai ($10.90), served with cucumber slices and a fried egg.

A Toast to Tradition

Great Nanyang also excels with traditional and thick toasts, a staple at all kopitiams. Their Hand-Made Kaya Toast is a testament to their commitment to preserving tradition. Made with freshly-baked bread and house-made kaya, it pairs perfectly with their Soft-Boiled Kampung Eggs ($2.50 for 2pcs).

Modern twists on savoury and sweet toasts are also available, catering to a wide range of tastes. French Toast lovers will adore the Peanut Butter, Kaya Butter, and Cheesy Ham options.

Kopi and Teh

No kopitiam experience is complete without the quintessential kopi and teh. Great Nanyang serves up traditional recipes with prized frothy foam on top for a smooth finish. Don’t miss out on the Coconut Coffee ($5.90) – a fragrant blend of Nanyang coffee and sweet condensed coconut milk.

For a refreshing twist, try the Golden Lime ($3.50), a zesty kumquat drink that’s tangy and invigorating.

Step into the Past

Designed for the Instagram and TikTok generations, Great Nanyang is not just about the food; it is also an immersive experience that seeks to transport you to the kopitiams of the 1950s-1980s. Vintage movie posters, old photographs, and antique furniture create an ambiance that’s rich in nostalgia.

Even the smallest details, like restored window grilles and traditional wooden doors, contribute to the authentic feel. The dedication to preserving heritage is evident in every aspect of Great Nanyang, from the floor tiles to the light switches.

Verdict?

Great Nanyang is the ideal place to indulge in nostalgia and savour some Singapore-style kopitiam and tze char favourites of yester-year. It is also a nice place to capture pictures for social media sharing.
