How To Make Your Lounge Brighter With Little Natural Light

A dimly lit lounge can be a stopping point when it comes to interior design. Click here to find out how you can find a way around it.

If you’re struggling with your interior design in the living room, it might be because the room has little to no natural light. Once you’ve noticed this, it’s hard to unsee it. This makes any interior design project very difficult, as natural light is so important to keep a room feeling spacious, comfortable and energising.

That being said, if your lounge has no natural light, it is not the end of the world. The first thing you should do is put your designs on hold and focus entirely on making them brighter. With this in mind, here are seven ways to make your lounge brighter and more beautiful before you start to instil your own theme:

Bright, Airy Furniture

First off, prioritise furniture that is bright and airy rather than dark fabric. This doesn’t mean you have to blow your budget on a stark, white leather sofa. There are many discount furniture sets and pieces that will have the optimal effect and get you on the right path for a brighter feel.

Soft, Warm Electric Light

If you’re using electric light to induce brightness, you’re likely to want bulbs that are… well, bright! But this is a mistake. Actually, you should be using soft, warm lighting with orange and yellow hues instead of bright whites. This will help the space feel less clinical and will instead infuse a feeling of gentleness and comfort.

Mirrors For A Larger Feel

Mirrors can also help to make a space feel larger and brighter at the same time. This is because they can reflect the light that is there, helping to double what you are working with. All you have to do is work out how to place those mirrors in the room – specifically, in the context of the room – and make sure you are maximising their impact.

Keep It Tidy And Organised

One thing that you might not think about when it comes to making your lounge brighter is clutter. If you do not control your storage space and there are a number of objects in your line of sight, then this will end up making the room feel dimmer, as clutter lacks reflective properties to help the space brighten.

If You Have A Window, Make It The Focal Point

Now, sometimes you can have a window in the lounge but still lack natural light – depending on where the room is angled in correlation to the sun. But that’s not to say there is no natural light. If this is the case, make sure to make the window the focal point of the room rather than a television or coffee table. If you do this, you will still get the effects of natural light wherever you are sitting in the room.

Use Neutral Colours For The Walls

We’ve mentioned purchasing a light, airy furniture, but it’s also important to go one step further and ensure that the walls are similarly bright in their colours. Choose neutral, soft hues across the walls, as this will help keep the room feeling light – especially when it comes to mirrors reflecting bright colours rather than dark.

Focus More On Rooms With Natural Light

Lastly, we should add that you don’t need to do any of this. In 2023, the living room is no more the heart of the house than the kitchen. If you are struggling to make the lounge feel inviting, perhaps focus more on rooms that do have natural light. Make them as good as they can be and create spots where people can gather, sit and enjoy the room for any purpose!
