The Amy Cheong Saga: Fast and Furious on Social Media

Amy Cheong

One racist Facebook post yesterday was all it takes.

Within 48 hours, Amy Cheong was fired from her cushy job as an Assistant Director at NTUC and chatised by no less than Minister Lim Swee Say and even Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong!

There is also a Facebook page called “FIRE Amy Cheong” dedicated to her with over 7,000 fans since it was set up yesterday.

Her name is one of the top searched on Google and is trending on Twitter.

Word-of-mouth has indeed gone WORLD-OF-MOUTH.

Amy Cheong tried to do some damage control, sending repeated apologies via Twitter, email and Facebook to save her own skin and probably her job too – to no avail.

Too late.

Now Amy Cheong knows – the Internet is serious business.

Amy Cheong learned this today

I was wondering why she did not take a leaf from previous social media screw-up whereby the blame was always shifted to another suspicious “administrator” or “maid” or “hubby” or whoever.

Remember Tin Pei Ling and Denise He (blame the administrator)?

Remember Gay Chao Hui, Joachime and Rachelle Ann Beguia (blame the hubby)?

Remember Butterflies and Cakes (blame the intern)?

I am not saying Amy Cheong should not be punished for her racist remarks, but if she is genuinely apologetic, I believe we should be more gracious and give her a chance to repent. At least she was honest enough to own up to her mistake and not pull a fast one by shifting the blame!

  • My personal opinion is no one should be spared for such racist remarks especially on the web.
She's educated, w/sound mind, living in a multi-cultural society & worst of all a high flyer "Asst Director" - she should have used her "brains" before giving such a grave comment...
Hopefully this would be a learning lesson to all those who just feel that they could simply show their frustration & get sympathy from others through either Fb or any other Internet media.. U'll be exposed soon & even think that you can get away by apologizing.
Like I've mentioned before think before you say anything stupid as eventually you're gonna embarrass yourself publicly.

  • k.shanmugam called Ms. cheong's comments 'shameful ' .He said the incident confined what he had long suspected and had said before, that there are ' deep fault lines in our society' based on race and religion . K.shanmugam is quick to blame all singaporean chinese as racist without getting the fact right that Amy cheong is australia citizen ! Shocking but true ! K.shanmugam should apologize for quick to blame all chinese singaporean. PM LEE should SACK him immediately !
