Following the sold-out success of Twelve Angry Men, Nine Years Theatre (NYT) returns with God of Carnage, the internationally acclaimed dark comedy by Yasmina Reza. Directed by four-time The Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards Best Director winner Nelson Chia, the production will run from 20 to 29 March 2026 at The Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre @ Funan.

Often described as a “comedy of no manners”, God of Carnage begins with the promise of civility, and quickly dismantles it. Two sets of parents meet to resolve a playground altercation between their sons. What starts as a polite, reasoned discussion soon spirals into chaos, confession and absurd catastrophe, revealing how thin the veneer of modern adulthood can be.
When Polite Smiles Crack
In the play, Veronica and Michael Goh invite Annette and Alan Lee into their living room, determined to address their children’s misbehaviour with grace and maturity. Surrounded by art books, tulips and homemade pastries, they set out to behave like responsible, enlightened adults.
But as the evening unfolds, seemingly minor irritants, a persistently ringing phone, a missing hamster and a bottle of fine rum, become triggers for a spectacular emotional unravelling. Winner of both the Tony Award and the Laurence Olivier Award, God of Carnage exposes just how fragile social decorum becomes under pressure, with ruthless humour and biting precision.
Powerhouse Cast, Precision Performances
Under Nelson Chia’s direction, the production brings together four formidable performers:
- Mia Chee as Veronica Goh
- Oon Shu An as Annette Lee
- Cavin Soh as Alan Lee
- Tay Kong Hui as Michael Goh
Together, they transform an outwardly civil living room into a battleground of sharp wit, emotional volatility and dark hilarity, delivering tightly charged performances that keep tensions simmering throughout.
A Satire of Civility and Control
At its core, God of Carnage is a sharp satire that uses rudeness as a scalpel, slicing through the polite façades of well-meaning adults. The play questions whether civility is merely a thin mask hiding our raw instincts, and what happens when that mask slips.
In an age where emotional restraint is often expected, the production offers audiences a cathartic release, a chance to laugh as characters lose control in spectacular fashion. Language itself becomes a weapon, with cultured arguments and ethical posturing inflicting the deepest wounds. The more refined the words, the sharper the sting.
Post-Show “Drink and Talk” Sessions
In line with NYT’s belief that theatre should spark dialogue, a post-show “Drink and Talk” session will be held after every performance. Audiences can engage in relaxed conversations with the cast and director over tea and wine, courtesy of Pek Sin Choon and CornerStone Wines.
