Calling all pho lovers in the west, Chef Minh Vietnamese Pho is bringing the popular and quintessential Vietnamese pho to the heartlands and into our hearts.
Located in Mei De Coffeeshop in the Bukit Batok neighbourhood, it’s the go-to option for most as seen from the super long queue when we visited on a weekend.
Don’t live nearby? If you trust queues as a barometer of tastiness (and our review!), we say this is well worth your journey to the west! Scroll down for bus services and MRT guide.
Chef Minh Vietnamese Pho
Simple and straightforward, there are only six dishes on the menu- five types of pho and one side of Vietnamese Spring roll. To ensure that the ingredients are fresh and healthy, Chef Minh wakes up as early as 5am every morning to prepare those ingredients. Not only that, he avoids MSG and uses flavourful spices instead.
Beef Pho
Diners get to choose from a selection of freshly imported beef cuts and variations to go with their Pho, from a hearty and flavor-rich bowl of Pho Beef Shank ($6) to the classic Pho Beef Tender Slices ($5.50) that melts in your mouth, and Pho Handmade Beef Balls ($5.50).
If you want to enjoy the best of all worlds, get Chef Minh’s favorite dish, the Pho Beef Combo ($6.50)! It features an assortment of beef shank, handmade beef ball, tender beef slices, beef tendon, and beef honeycomb tripe in that one bowl of hearty pho.
A delectable depth of flavours surprised us as we took our first sip of the beef broth. The rich fragrance and flavours of the beef broth are the result of slow boiling marrow-rich beef bones in a stockpot for eight hours, enhanced by seven different aromatics and spices.
The generous piece of beef tendon is very succulent and collagen-rich; the beef meet ball is fresh and springy; the beef honeycomb tripe is scrumptious and savoury.
Chicken Pho
If beef is not your thing, try the Pho Shredded Chicken ($5). It comes with a generous portion of shredded kampung chicken and pho. The chicken broth is unexpectedly rich in flavour yet very light on the palette. Just like the beef broth preparation, the chicken broth is slowly boiled for six hours with a mixture of chicken bones, pork bones and old chicken.
Sides
The Summer Roll 2pcs ($4) rightfully deserves all the attention as the one and only side dish option on the menu. Wrapped in thin and translucent Vietnamese rice paper, the roll features an appetising combination of fresh prawns, tender pork belly and thick vermicelli alongside fresh lettuce and cucumber strips.
The rolls are served with a classic dip made of sweet soy sauce, peanut sauce, and Vietnamese chilli sauce. The sauce is the soul of this dish as it maximises the flavours and juiciness of the roll. A must-try!
