I am a Blogger, #WhereMyFreebies?

Bloggers do not ask for freebies, the “freebies” come our way.

In any case, most people only see the glamorous part, but do not recognise the tremendous time and effort required to maintain a blog with substantial traffic and social media following in the long run.

If you just keep writing to get freebies, I guarantee you your traffic will never go far.

I started blogging in 2007, not to get freebies, but as an outlet for me to express my opinions and also to test-bed online content since my day job is in digital marketing. The benefits that came along were byproducts.

Blogging is just a hobby for me. I have a day-job that pays comfortably and I do not rely on blogging to feed my family.

Nonetheless, I take pride in what I post. A lot of hard work goes behind the blog posts – the photos, videos, editing and packaging everything in the best way for readers.

I have many friends who blog because they enjoy blogging, not because of freebies. It is an insult when we get grouped together with the like of this lady call Janice Leong (Janiqueel), whom I am about to introduce to everyone.

Here is an exchange between Janice and a Conrad Chua whom she approached to get sponsorship for free haircuts:

Rude and shameless.

I am not mincing my words.

She totally deserve this reply from Conrad:

She is the one who wrote in to the salon to ask for a sponsorship and here she is threatening to harm them commercially?

Her blog has since been deleted, but her Linkedin and Instagram profiles are still accessible.

Janice Leong (Janiqueel) thinks she is very famous (or wants to be famous), so I am helping her with it. Enjoy the fame.

She had made it to Taiwanese news and will be making more media appearances locally and internationally:

(The above picture is fake btw, but I have no doubt she will get there soon)

Ironically, I believe no one will remember about this incident a few months later. Janice on the other hand, will benefit from all the free publicity and become another “famous” lifestyle blogger, living the life she wanted with tonnes of freebies.

This is blogging in Singapore.

Tweet me @alvinologist with suggestion on what freebies you would like as a blogger. Use the hash tag, #WhereMyFreebies – eg. I am Alvinology and I blog about NS. SAF should give me discount for my reservist. #WhereMyFreebies

Here’s another blogger who could give Janice a run for her money.

alvinology

Alvin is a marketer by day and blogger by night. He is a 100% geek who spends too much time surfing the web.

  • This Janice is way too over her head. She is really bringing a very bad name to bloggers all around. But this Conrad dude should not have stoop till so low to her level just to prove a point. Haiz.... 1 person low EQ already very jia lat liao. Somemore there are two of them....

  • I was actually starting to sympathise with her because of all the flake she is getting online. But after visiting her facebook fanpage which is still up, she claims that her social media, email and blog were "hacked", and it was not her who sent the email to Conrad. The hacker did.

Unless we are all 3 year old gullible children, that is the worst response for her mistake ever. If she had apologized and acknowledged how badly she handled rejection, I would have given her credit. But she's further digging her reputation grave by coming up with such a weak excuse, passing the blame to a "hacker" (probably The Messiah, since everyone is just blaming him for everything).

  • Wahlau eh!! where got like that one..ask ppl to give free stuff...and then try to threaten people..she can be sued actually leh...and now she's up in the news in Taiwan..serve her right...

  • Alvin, u are a fool for believing the Taiwan news is genuine. Please lah u blur block, go read the Chinese wording on that image u posted, see what it says. Really zero credibility u, that's why people have no respect for bloggers like u. Siay suay to the max. LOL!

  • I just had the encounter of the Janice kind. I invited a group of bloggers to my company's Beauty Week and they get to choose 3 out of the 6 workshops to attend. She decides that she gets to choose 4 instead AND that she can bring as many friends with her. Moreover, during the workshop, she was disruptive and rude by not paying attention to most of the speakers. During yesterday's event, she opted to go for beer (not covered by me and participants were informed that they had to pay for privately requested drinks) and was going to leave the event without paying but when the cafe staff passed her the bill, she asked her friend to pay for it. For tonight's event, she turned up 1 hour late, ate dinner before promptly leaving half an hour later. She's really in it just for the freebies which is really sad because I'm a blogger too and I appreciate what you mentioned about how freebies come to you rather than you go around looking for it. Moreover, I believe in reciprocity and if you're a real blogger, you'll blog about your experience rather than just type out media releases and briefs.

  • I also had an incredibly unpleasant experience with Janice with the company I work for. Not only did she not follow through with even half of what she initially proposed, but some of the products she was given were never blogged about at all. Not to mention her lack of tastefulness when promoting a brand. Since she did not come through completely, I requested she bring the articles back and not continue with the blogging, however she distastefully told me she would not.

  • Bloggers like that paves a wrong impression of us blogger in general. I totally agree on the freebies point. To be honest, I have come across people who are willing to give me free services or products not because I am a huge number of followers etc, but because my write ups are factual and with personal touch.
