Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Launches Todd’s Fable-lous Bag to Bring Chinese Idioms and Storytelling into Preschools

The Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) is bringing Chinese language and culture into preschool classrooms through a new educational initiative, Todd’s Fable-lous Bag, which will be available for loan from November 2026 to December 2028.

Designed for preschoolers, the programme uses storytelling, hands on activities and Chinese idioms to introduce young children to cultural values and language learning. It follows the positive response to SCCC’s Culture on Wheels travelling trunks for primary schools, which were launched in July 2025.

Todd’s Fable-lous Bag comprises three thematic travelling trunks, each centred on a Chinese idiom. The idioms are presented through original stories with local twists, following Todd, a preschooler who discovers the meaning behind each expression through everyday experiences.

While Culture on Wheels introduces primary school pupils to Chinese culture through festivals and traditional art forms, the preschool edition focuses on helping younger children appreciate Chinese culture, understand values and develop their Chinese language skills through age-appropriate storytelling.

The 70cm tall trunks feature animal themed designs and contain learning materials and interactive activities tailored to preschool educators and children. Each trunk also comes with bilingual digital teacher guides and curriculum aligned electronic lesson plans to help educators incorporate the activities into their classroom teaching.

SCCC partnered with MOE Kindergarten @ Valour to conduct a media preview of Todd’s Fable-lous Bag. During the session, educators and children participated in a storytelling demonstration showcasing how the travelling trunks can support early learning in Chinese language and culture.

Beyond the classroom activities, preschools that have successfully borrowed the trunks can also opt for a paid storytelling and food making workshop, available from November 2026. The workshop is designed to extend the learning experience by allowing children to explore the stories and cultural themes through interactive and sensory activities.

Interested preschools can register online to borrow one thematic trunk at a time for a period of one month at no cost. The initiative offers educators an additional resource to introduce Chinese idioms and cultural appreciation to young learners in an engaging and accessible way.
