WhatsApp is introducing a series of new calling features that make it easier for users to stay connected across devices, including the long-awaited ability to make and receive voice and video calls directly from a web browser.
The biggest addition is Web Calling, which allows users to place and receive both one on one and group audio and video calls through WhatsApp Web without downloading the desktop app. Whether using a shared computer, a work laptop with software restrictions or simply preferring a browser, users can now access WhatsApp calling directly online.
WhatsApp Web also supports many of the familiar calling features available on mobile and desktop, including screen sharing, reactions and a dedicated Calls tab that provides quick access to call history and favourite contacts. As with calls on other devices, web calls remain end to end encrypted, with no time limits or additional charges.
Another new feature is Call Transfer, which allows users to seamlessly move an ongoing group call between devices without disconnecting. For example, a call started on a smartphone or tablet can be transferred to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app when arriving at home or the office, making it easier to continue conversations on a larger screen. The transfer also works in the opposite direction.
WhatsApp is also adding Waiting Room, giving users more control over who joins group calls. When creating a call link, hosts can enable the “Require approval to join” option, placing participants in a waiting room until they are approved to enter the call.
Video quality is also receiving an upgrade with QuickHD, which delivers high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call instead of requiring users to wait for quality to improve over time.
To improve voice clarity, WhatsApp has launched Noise Suppression, a feature that reduces background noise during calls so voices remain clear even in busy or noisy environments. Users can turn the feature on or off at any time through the in-call settings.
WhatsApp says these new calling features will roll out gradually and become available to users worldwide in the coming weeks.
