Singapore Fringe Festival set to return in 2027 despite crowdfunding shortfall

The Singapore Fringe Festival will return in 2027, with organisers confirming that the event will run from 13 to 24 January even though its latest fundraising campaign did not meet its target.

The Necessary Stage, which curates and produces the festival, said a total of $59,592 was raised over a three-month crowdfunding effort involving audiences, artists and foundations. Donations made before 31 March 2026 were also matched through Tote Board’s Enhanced Fundraising Programme. However, the total still fell short of the $80,000 goal, prompting the organisers to continue fundraising efforts to support the festival’s upcoming edition.

At the same time, the festival has launched a separate fundraising initiative aimed at strengthening accessibility features and providing additional support for commissioned young local artists. Donations can be made here, with contributions above $10 eligible for tax exemption and matched dollar for dollar under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth Cultural Matching Fund.

First launched in 2005, the Singapore Fringe Festival is an annual ground up arts platform organised by The Necessary Stage that presents contemporary performance works engaging with social and political issues. Over the years, it has commissioned and showcased more than a thousand local and international works while supporting emerging independent artists and collectives in Singapore.

The festival is also known for its strong focus on accessibility. Many performances include open captions, audio descriptions, Singapore Sign Language interpretation and relaxed performances, alongside efforts to maintain affordable ticket pricing. Past editions have explored themes such as migration, inequality, climate change, mental health and discrimination.

The Fringe Festival’s shift towards a fully community supported model began after the loss of its long time title sponsor, mobile network operator M1 Ltd, following 2025. A major crowdfunding drive that followed was successfully completed in time for the 2026 edition, marking the festival’s first fully ground up iteration supported by public donations. That edition saw strong audience turnout, with several shows including A Lesbian Love Story: The Musical by Woody Avenue and Invisible by ART:DIS and The Necessary Stage enjoying sold out runs.

Looking ahead, The Necessary Stage is also seeking new sponsors and partners to support the festival’s long term sustainability, with interest in collaborations from both arts philanthropists and corporations.

The full programme for Fringe 2027 will be announced in early November 2026.
