Singapore HeritageFest 2026: Stepping Back in Time at Clifford Pier with Port of Dreams by The Kaizen M.D.

The Singapore HeritageFest 2026 has officially docked on our shores, running from 1 to 24 May. This year, the islandwide festival celebrates our rich maritime heritage with over one hundred community partner programmes that explore the historical connections and everyday resilience of our local seafaring communities. Helmed by Festival Director Qazim Karim and Festival Lead Yogamalar Thiagarajan, the massive event promises something for everyone.

We had the opportunity to attend the media preview performance of Port of Dreams yesterday and it sets a cheerful and highly accessible tone for the month of festivities ahead.

Staged by the multidisciplinary arts collective The Kaizen M.D., Port of Dreams is a lively promenade performance located at the iconic Clifford Pier and The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore.

Founded in July 2012 by Artistic Director and Producer Norisham Osman, the collective has a long history of bringing young artists together to create engaging contemporary works. Their latest offering does exactly that by transforming a standard historical tour into an immersive walking experience.

The premise is straightforward.

It starts off as a seemingly serious walking tour

You follow a seemingly serious tour guide through the hotel grounds, only to be continually interrupted by four spirited characters emerging from the shadows.

Followed by a Malay character

And finally a Chinese character

These theatrical ghosts share their personal stories of adventure and hope, attempting to bring the bustling port days back to life right before our eyes.

As a theatrical experience, Port of Dreams plays it very safe.

It serves as a textbook introduction to Singapore history that features lighthearted fun rather than deep or profound narratives. If you are looking for complex historical analysis or a gritty retelling of the past, this might not be the show for you. However, it makes for a great outing for tourists, expatriates, and young children.

The interactive elements keep the pacing brisk, ensuring that kids remain engaged while learning a little history along the way. As it is a moving performance with segments held outdoors, be advised to wear comfortable attire and walking shoes. The show continues even in light rain, so bringing an umbrella and a portable fan to be ready for all conditions.

Singapore HeritageFest 2026 Sets Sail with Islandwide Celebration of Maritime Heritage - Alvinology

Beyond the theatrics at Clifford Pier, the wider festival offers an impressive array of activities to fill your weekends.

The central hub of the celebration is HOMEGROUND situated at the Asian Civilisations Museum Green. Here, attendees can enjoy free movie screenings on the lawn set against the historic waterfront, featuring beloved local classics such as Lion Men, Home Run, and the Long Long Time Ago series.

The festival village also hosts vibrant weekend programming. Highlights include Cherita Singapura by Bhaskar Arts Academy, which tells the founding myth of Sang Nila Utama through traditional Kathakali dance.

Visitors can also try their hand at relief art during the Spice Printing session by STPI, or join Artusik in The Port Orchestra, a musical celebration where the audience plays along with a multiethnic ensemble of gamelan and classical instruments.

The cultural offerings at the festival hub continue with the Opera Academy production of Pantomime Bangsawan Sang Nila Utama, a beautiful Malay opera featuring Nusantara music and contemporary ballet. Ding Yi Music Company presents a maritime themed Chinese chamber concert called Go Local OUR Singapore, while Sri Warisan Som Said Performing Arts brings the traditional village spirit to life with Kampong Life Gotong Royong, an immersive dance performance that concludes with a communal joget dance.

If you prefer to explore outside the city center, the festival has curated several unique trails and tours.

You can cruise down the river on a moving vessel with A Bump Through Time, or join the Currents and Crossings guided art walk from the river to Telok Ayer to discover the hidden stories of early migration and everyday resilience.

For the truly adventurous night owls, the Fish to Port tour begins at 2am in Jurong, offering a rare glimpse into the only remaining fishery ports where our daily seafood lands. With such a massive lineup of community led storytelling, the festival offers a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the voices and trades that transformed a quiet island into a global maritime hub.
