Ethiopian Airlines Celebrates 80 Years, Boosting Asia–Africa Connectivity Through Singapore

Ethiopian Airlines is celebrating 80 years since its inaugural commercial flight in 1946. From its first service to Cairo, the airline has grown into a global network, connecting Africa with key markets across Asia, Europe, North America, and South America, anchored by a modern fleet and the Addis Ababa hub, designed for seamless onward connections across the continent.

Strong Growth in Southeast Asia

The anniversary comes at a time of rapid expansion in Asia–Africa travel. By late 2025, travel between Singapore and Africa had increased 57%, while Ethiopian Airlines’ passenger volumes via Singapore grew 87% year-on-year. The airline expects to transport over 200,000 travellers from Asia via Singapore to Addis Ababa by the end of 2026, with convenient connections to more than 60 African destinations.

To meet rising demand, Ethiopian Airlines now operates five weekly direct flights between Singapore and Addis Ababa, supporting both passenger and cargo needs, while reinforcing Singapore as a strategic gateway to Africa for corporates, SMEs, investors, and regional institutions.

Looking Ahead: Vision 2035 and Innovation

The airline’s expansion strengthens Addis Ababa as a key link between Southeast Asia and Africa, aligning with Ethiopian Airlines’ Vision 2035 and long-term growth strategy. Investments continue in fleet modernisation and next-generation capacity, including additions to both widebody and narrowbody aircraft.

Looking forward, Ethiopian Airlines plans to explore electric air taxi operations and develop the $12.5 billion Bishoftu International Airport, enhancing Africa’s connectivity and supporting sustainable long-haul travel for decades to come.

Celebrating eight decades of operational excellence, Ethiopian Airlines continues to redefine the Asia–Africa travel corridor, making Singapore a vital hub for passengers and cargo alike.
