Bukit Batok Library Reopens with Double the Space and Singapore’s First Immersive Sound-Based Reading Experience

Bukit Batok Library has officially reopened with a brand-new look, and double its previous space, bringing patrons an unprecedented blend of sound, visuals, and expanded facilities designed to elevate the reading experience.

Formerly located only on Level 3 of West Mall, the revamped library now spans Levels 1, 2, and 3, stretching over 2,700 square metres. With nearly twice the number of seats available, the refreshed space invites the community to read, discover, and recharge in a calm, sensory-rich environment. Minister for Digital Development and Information, Mrs Josephine Teo, presided over the reopening ceremony this morning.

Inspired by Little Guilin, Powered by Sound

Drawing inspiration from Bukit Batok Town Park’s iconic Little Guilin, the redesigned library embraces nature’s tranquility through immersive sound and visual elements. This marks the National Library Board’s first use of sound as a core feature in enhancing reading and exploration.

At the heart of this experience is the SingLand Soundscape, an audio installation created in collaboration with Singapore Land Group. Featuring bespoke soundtracks by local sound artist Mervin Wong, the installation uses ambisonic field recordings captured around Bukit Batok. Patrons will encounter these multidirectional soundscapes as they move from Level 1 to Level 2, complemented by curated audio-visual materials from NLB’s collections that highlight shared memories of the neighbourhood.

Smart Discovery with Omni-Channel Features

To make discovering content easier and more interactive, the library introduces new digital touchpoints that bridge physical and digital collections.

  • Scan-n-Discover: Patrons can scan a book’s QR code to instantly receive tailored recommendations, both physical titles and eBooks, displayed in a dynamic visual burst.
  • Infinite Shelves: Installed in high-demand sections like Travel, Health, and Adult Fiction, these interactive displays extend physical shelves into virtual ones, offering access to extensive eBook selections.
  • Enhanced digital displays also spotlight curated audiobooks, which can be borrowed instantly via QR codes using the NLB Mobile App.

Extended Access for Greater Convenience

In line with NLB’s ongoing innovation efforts, Bukit Batok Library now offers extended access hours supported by secure entrance gantries.

  • 9:00am–9:00pm: Access to all three levels (with staff-assisted services from 11:00am onward).
  • 9:00pm–10:00pm: Additional extended hours for the Level 2 Multimedia and Study Zone.

Patrons can enter by scanning their library member QR code through the NLB Mobile App.
