[Review] Now You See Me Live Trades Movie Magic for Real Time High Tech Tricks and Houdini Style Escapes, Wows Crowd in Singapore

The Southeast Asia Premiere of Now You See Me Live has officially opened at the Sands Theatre, running until 8 March 2026. Inspired by the global blockbuster film franchise from Lionsgate, the production is brought to the stage by Simon Painter and Tim Lawson, the producers behind the record breaking phenomenon The Illusionists.

The live show attempts to translate the cinematic magic of the Four Horsemen onto a theatrical stage. While the production shares very little narrative with the movies beyond its branding and vigilantism theme, it stands firmly on its own feet as a slick, highly polished spectacle packed with genuine talent, witty crowd work, and strong audience engagement.

The Singapore gala night showcased a newly assembled quartet of international illusionists, each with their own distinctive signature trades.

Serving as the primary emcee for the evening is Matthew Pomeray from the United Kingdom. Harnessing technology and deceptive sleight of hand, Pomeray proves to be a quick witted and engaging host whose impromptu crowd interactions and mind reading feats keep the pacing energetic.

Beside him is Pablo Cánovas from Spain, a charming young lad whose quiet charm and artful delivery of teleportation illusions add a layer of elegance to the lineup.

Representing Canada is Gabriella Lester, the youngest and only female Horseman at just 22. Lester brings a refreshing burst of confidence and fiery passion to the group. Her acts range from escaping a locked safe right before an explosion to quieter moments that connect directly with the audience.

Rounding out the cast is Italian daredevil Andrew Basso, who steals the show with his visceral and dangerous stunts. Basso leaves us gripping to our seats during a nail-biting recreation of the famous water torture cell escape, submerged upside down and chained while holding his breath for over two minutes, proving that the thrill of live danger cannot be replicated on film. You have to see it live.

The production itself is a massive and visually stunning undertaking. Clever stage design and evocative lighting amplify the tension, while roaming cameras broadcast every detail onto a massive screen, daring the audience to catch the secret behind the trick.

This immersive approach extends directly to the seating area.

The most universally praised segment is a communal card trick where thousands of spectators rip, shuffle, and toss playing cards into the air, successfully pulling off a collective illusion that inspires screams of delight.

The cards are chosen at random when we enter the theatre and still end up with the same predicted result for everyone. I do not know how they did it, but I indeed got back my card as predicted, as did all the people seated around me. It was truly impressive.

Overall, Now You See Me Live succeeds by relying less on the movie credentials of its source material and relying on the undeniable skill of its performers. The result is a show that deliver an adrenaline fueled experience that delivers on keeping you entertained and truly engaged.

Without giving out any spoilers, the show culminates in a surprisingly touching finale about how magic can connect strangers through shared wonder, leaving both sceptical adults and fascinated children spellbound. For those looking to abandon logic for a few hours and witness the impossible up close, this theatrical feat is truly a show you have to see to believe.
