[Review] Cotton Candy Sukiyaki and Bear Hot Pots at Katanashi AN, An Affordable CBD Japanese Restaurant

Katanashi AN has long been known as one of those nondescript, but popular casual Japanese dining spots in the CBD that office workers keep in their regular lunch rotation. Located along Boon Tat Street in Telok Ayer, the restaurant draws a steady crowd with its extensive menu of rice bowls, hot pots, ramen and small plates, all priced competitively for the area.

Recently, the menu ventures beyond the typical popular skewers and small plates into some unique comforting and visually playful dishes. We were invited for a dinner tasting and tried out some of these.

One of the new highlights is their Bear Nabe ($18), a personal sized Japanese hot pot centered around a charming, melting bear shaped collagen ball that dissolves into a rich, nourishing broth. Served with pork slices, mushrooms, and vegetables, it’s a wholesome and satisfying option.

For something sweeter and entirely Instagram worthy, the Cotton Candy Sukiyaki (), available in pink or blue, is a conversation starter. The fluffy cloud of candy melts into the savoury soup base, creating a subtly sweet dipping broth for the slices of sukiyaki beef.

If you prefer something more traditional in flavour, but yet contemporary in the culinary presentation, their seasonal chazuke offerings are great choices.

The Wagyu Truffle Chazuke (.18) comes with delicate slices of raw Wagyu to mix into the warm tea poured over rice, offering a decadent, umami rich combination.

Its counterpart, the Premium Hokkaido Chazuke (.18), is a seafood lover’s delight, featuring a generous medley of prawn, scallop, tuna, and salmon sashimi.

Both are served with a side of tofu and dashi.

For those craving a staple, the Tonkotsu Ramen (.80) provides a reliable, hearty option.

Value is obviously one of its strongest draws. Great for a budget lunch or dinner with colleagues or friends in the CBD area if your office is nearby.
