As the year-end festive season approaches, the neighbourhood around Block 179, Woodlands Street 13 once again comes alive in a warm glow of twinkling lights and Christmas cheer. What has become a cherished annual tradition continues to draw smiles from residents and passers-by alike, transforming the heart of the estate into a festive wonderland.
Behind the magical display is resident Mr Tan Khoon Tat, affectionately known in the community as the “wonderland builder”. Each year, Mr Tan single-handedly designs, creates and sets up the decorations, turning the carpark entrance into a welcoming festive spectacle. Although he initially considered taking a break this year, he ultimately decided to carry on, recognising how the display has become an integral part of the neighbourhood’s identity.
Visitors are greeted by colourful fairy lights cascading from roof shelters, flanked by Christmas trees and classic festive décor in gold, red and green lining both sides of the road. Among the most eye-catching features are the reindeer centrepieces, a personal favourite of Mr Tan’s and a hit with young families in the area.
For Mr Tan, the true reward comes from seeing children interact with the decorations and sharing in their excitement. As the lights illuminate after sunset, the display creates a comforting and cheerful atmosphere for residents returning home, offering a brief pause to soak in the festive spirit.
