[Review] Toy Factory’s 《黄金公主》Radin Mas, Who? Delivers Laughter and Heartfelt Home Truths

Toy Factory Productions’ latest show,《黄金公主》Radin Mas, Who?, is a delightful surprise that uses the familiar setting of a Telok Blangah Community Centre to explore profound themes of identity and belonging. Pitched as the company’s first-ever feel-good Mandarin family comedy for all generations, the production takes the ancient Javanese legend of a princess known for her filial piety and courage and embeds it within the wonderfully messy, chaotic rehearsals of a local theatre group.

The show gently takes its time to build momentum. The initial scenes may feel a little slow, and some of the introductory jokes might not land perfectly, leaning towards the corny side. However, this pace allows the audience to gradually connect with the ensemble cast, featuring a diverse mix of local residents and migrant workers as they stumble through forgotten lines and fixing props. This journey of shared struggle and unexpected connection is what anchors the play. As the characters blossom on stage, I find myself developing a genuine fondness and affinity for their journeys.

Director Aricia Ng and playwright Titus Hutch Jr. Yim succeeded in creating something uniquely Singaporean. The performance’s use of Mandarin, complemented by English and Chinese subtitles for inclusivity, is infused with the distinct mix of Chinese and English accents of different nationalities that feels authentic and close to home.

The production shines brightest in its clever parallel between the centuries-old tale of Princess Radin Mas who was herself a migrant to Temasek and the everyday challenges faced by modern Singaporean residents, including today’s immigrant community. This thematic link of seeking a new life and finding home with “golden dreams” hits hard, adding surprising emotional weight to the comedy. It transforms what starts as a playful retelling into a heartfelt and humorous celebration of community spirit, intergenerational bonds, and the simple act of finding where you belong. This is the perfect show to stage for SG60 as Singapore celebrates our 60th birthday.

The show also features a special collaboration with wushu performers from Martial House, adding to the visual effects and dynamism on stage.

Overall, Radin Mas, Who? is a wholesome show that manages to evoke both laughter and a touched, reflective feeling by the final curtain.

It is a compelling choice for families, especially since tickets are eligible for redemption using the SG Culture Pass credits.

Toy Factory’s《黄金公主》Radin Mas, Who? is showing at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre Auditorium from now till 23 November 2025, with ticket prices ranging from $42 to $59 each.
