Run For Inclusion 2024 Celebrates a Decade of Inclusive Sports at Jurong Lake Gardens

Run For Inclusion 2024 marked its 10th anniversary with a vibrant event at Jurong Lake Gardens, drawing over 1,800 participants united in support of inclusivity through sports. Organized by Runninghour, Singapore’s leading inclusive sports co-operative, the event underscored a decade of fostering empathy, integration, and social support for persons with special needs (PWSNs).

The event was officiated by Mr. Eric Chua, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and the Ministry of Social and Family Development. Mr. Chua flagged off the 10km race and took part in the Signature Blindfold Run/Walk, where participants walked blindfolded with guides, experiencing firsthand the challenges of visual impairment. This impactful activity was one of many designed to inspire empathy and highlight the importance of inclusivity.

Run For Inclusion 2024 invited people from all backgrounds to join, creating an inclusive environment where individuals with and without special needs participated side by side. Event categories included a 3km and 5km run/walk, a 10km run, and a 15km cycling route, with tandem biking options specifically adapted for PWSNs. Dignitaries like Mr. Daisuke Kakihara and Ms. Liang Yu of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Singapore (JCCI) were also present, reinforcing the strong community commitment to supporting inclusion.

Founded in 2009, Runninghour has pioneered inclusive sports initiatives in Singapore, offering PWSNs year-round activities such as weekly runs, yoga, fitness classes, and hikes. With over 450 volunteer guides from diverse nationalities, the co-operative fosters a supportive environment where PWSNs can develop friendships and experience belonging. Many guides form close bonds with their “buddies,” providing encouragement that extends beyond the sports field.

New Experiences and Partnerships for 2024

This year, participants also enjoyed complimentary try-outs of kayaking, dragon boating, and pedal boating, thanks to a collaboration with Passion Wave @ Jurong Lake Gardens. These activities allowed participants to further connect with the scenic setting while celebrating inclusion in exciting new ways.

The event’s success was supported by partners and sponsors, including Central Singapore Community Development Council, Singapore National Co-operative Federation, JCCI, Farrer Park Hospital, Seacare Co-operative, and Ripple Hydration. Their dedication enables Runninghour to continue expanding its message of inclusivity and making a meaningful impact.
