If you love Singapore-style Wanton Noodles, you would be familiar with the famous Eng’s Wanton Mee, saga aside, over the various claims by different stalls for the OG status. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter who was the original. Taste is subjective – just frequent the one that suits your taste buds best.
Wanton Fu (Wanton 福) makes no such claim, but it is the brainchild of a former staff member of Eng’s Wantan Noodles, presenting the same familiar tastes of the signature fiery chili sauce and tangy noodle texture.
A hidden gem nestled in Jalan Besar at ARC 380, near Bendemeer and Boon Keng MRT stations, Wanton Fu has been quietly building up a steady pool of customers since its inception in 2018.
The no-frills, standalone restaurant offers a menu reminiscent of Eng’s, with a touch of innovation that sets it apart.
The menu features Wanton Noodles alongside a selection of sides, including Homemade Fried Ngoh Hiang, Dumpling Soup, and Fried Wanton. Diners can opt for the Signature Wanton Noodles, which boasts the same springy texture and eggy feel reminiscent of Eng’s Wantan Noodle.
To cater to more diverse taste buds, Wanton Fu recently launched a traditional version of their signature Wanton Noodles that uses thinner yellow noodles with black sauce that is more akin to most other Wanton Noodles found at hawker centres across Singapore.
I tried both and found both to be equally delightful. However, if you like your Wanton Noodle to be extra spicy with lots of chili added, the original version would suit you better as the spice note is more evenly distributed with the springy noodles. Go for the traditional version if you prefer something milder and sweeter, accentuated by the black sauce.
What sets Wanton Fu apart is its fiery chili sauce, which adds a kick to every bite. Paired with the noodles, it creates a tantaliaing flavour profile that leaves you craving for more, even as you feel your tongue burning.
I had to wolf down two cans of Coke Zero to ease my flaming tongue, but the chili was just too good to resist adding more into the noodle.
For those who prefer a milder flavour, Wanton Fu also offer a homemade garlic oil that elevates the dish with its aromatic fragrance. All the sauce and dips are self-serve and you can custom your noodle accordingly to suit your taste bud.
