RE•MIX 2K23 Returns to Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre: A Celebration of Youth and Culture

The four edition of RE•MIX 2K23, a youth festival hosted at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) is now running from 5 November to 19 November. This vibrant event celebrates the fusion of modernity with Chinese Singaporean heritage, inviting youths to rediscover and embrace their cultural roots through engaging arts and cultural experiences.

Curated with the aim of empowering young Singaporeans, RE•MIX 2K23 offers a diverse array of activities tailored to immerse participants in the rich tapestry of Chinese Singaporean art and culture.

We headed down to check it out during the opening weekend and it was well worth the visit, with lots of activities to see and do for the whole family that is not just fun, but educational as well.

Young singer performing live

Workshops, busking performances, exhibitions, an escape game, bazaars, and more await attendees throughout the festival’s duration.

Live Long & Prosper by Jahan Loh

One of the standout attractions is an experiential installation titled “Live Long & Prosper”, conceived by local artist Jahan Loh. This immersive room brims with gold ingots, delving into Chinese perspectives on auspiciousness and the pursuit of a fulfilling life.

To complement this installation, a pop-up cafe operated by MADU The Bakery will offer exclusive RE•MIX bakes featuring unique Singaporean flavors, such as chilli crab otah bun and orh nee muah chee cake.

Among the festival’s highlights is a hands-on workshop teaching attendees how to bond and enhance cognitive abilities through the Singaporean way of playing mahjong. Do you know that the animal tiles that you see in your grandparents’ mahjong sets are unique to Singapore? We found out about it through the workshop.

Singaporean style Mahjong

For the young ones and the young at heart, a market and fair at level 1 featuring a human claw machine offering attractive prizes, along with a specially themed escape room drawing inspiration from Chinese culture and folklore will keep you entertained.

Visiting Tip: Go for the human claw machine at just per try. It is easy to win and you can get your money back by at least 2 to 3 times collecting vouchers for workshops, F&B and more.

For those keen on taking home a piece of the festival, check out the following:

  • Purchase any “Live Long & Prosper” qian (签) or merchandise for a chance to participate in the grand lucky draw, with prizes including the coveted ACU Jade God of Fortune 1000% BE@RBRICK.
  • Follow SCCC’s Instagram account for details on winning a “qian” (签) and a cafe voucher to redeem preservative-free snacks and drinks at the “Live Long & Prosper” exhibition.

For those who like pop art, check out the art exhibition, I’ve Got This: Drawing Perseverance, by local artist, K. We found her artworks really inspirational and fun. These can be found on level 9 and 10.

While at SCCC, also check out the SINGAPO人: Discovering Singaporean Chinese Culture free, interactive exhibition at level 2 if you have some time to spare. We found it very refreshing and well-curated, making learning about our Chinese heritage in Singapore more engaging.

Synopsis of the exhibition:

Chinese culture in Singapore has evolved in a way unlike other communities around the world. Singapore is a tiny Southeast Asian nation-state located in a region with many ethnic groups, of which the Chinese comprise only a small percentage of the overall population. However, the Chinese form the majority in Singapore, living alongside a significant proportion of non-Chinese residents. Over many years, interaction with other cultures, encouraged by geographical proximity and social diversity, has birthed a Chinese Singaporean identity that is complex and ever-changing. At the SCCC, join in the conversation and discover (or rediscover) what it means to be a Chinese Singapo人.
