In a bid to make a profound impact on patients’ lives and bolster the ranks of bone marrow donors, the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP) is gearing up for its annual flagship event, Match For Life (MFL) 2023. Since its debut in 2019, MFL has been a platform to raise awareness about blood-related diseases, fostering community engagement throughout Singapore.
Continuing the legacy of last year’s MFL, the theme for this year is “I Can Save Lives.” With a specific focus on recruiting donors from the Malay and Indian communities, who are underrepresented in the donor registry, BMDP aims to make a significant difference.
Spanning 993 square meters, the Kampung Admiralty Carnival will be a hub of awareness and engagement. Visitors will have access to interactive roadshow exhibits, fringe activities including a bouncy castle, and various carnival games. BMDP representatives will be present to educate the public on the bone marrow donation process, debunking misconceptions and answering questions.
The interactive exhibits will be divided into three sections:
1. To Learn: Visitors will discover essential information about bone marrow, blood diseases, and various methods of bone marrow donation through an engaging exhibit.
2. To be Inspired/Touched: At this station, attendees can view videos and read inspirational stories of donors and beneficiaries, fostering a deeper understanding of the significance of bone marrow donation.
3. To be Empowered: Visitors will have the opportunity to register as bone marrow donors, learning about the challenges involved in finding suitable donors. An interactive game will help them understand the importance of finding the right match. Additionally, a QR code will lead to BMDP’s newly developed virtual roadshow for convenient learning and informed decision-making.
In the lead-up to and following the main event at Kampung Admiralty, roadshows at JEM (2 to 8 October) and Jurong Point (23 to 29 October) will be held. BMDP representatives will be available to provide information on the bone marrow donation process, offer cheek swab kits for on-site registration, and dispel common myths.
BMDP is committed to maintaining awareness around the importance of bone marrow donations. Outreach to corporates and schools will encourage working professionals and students to join as bone marrow donors. Corporates will have the opportunity to partner with BMDP to demonstrate their commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR).
By partnering with BMDP, companies can support this life-saving mission, fostering a culture of compassion within their organizations. This collaboration aligns perfectly with the spirit of giving back to society, potentially saving lives and spreading hope.
This year’s Match for Life campaign calls upon individuals to register as bone marrow donors if they meet the eligibility criteria. Donors can register via the BMDP website and receive a cheek swab kit within a few working days. Corporate organizations are also encouraged to collaborate with BMDP by opening their doors to awareness sessions, volunteering opportunities, and fundraising initiatives.
