Delicious Desserts Born In The South

Being in Charleston is like living on vacation all year; there are always new things to do, fantastic restaurants to try, oyster roasts to attend, historical buildings and plantations to tour, and a slew of other community activities to attend. Charleston’s population is rising at a rate that is around three times that of the United States. To accommodate this rising population, more districts are being constructed, and formerly neglected areas of the city are being renovated. Apartments in Charleston SC can be costly and the neighborhoods are well-known for their ease of living and pleasant weather.

Once you’ve settled in, it’s time to seek for the most delectable southern treats. The South is known for its sumptuous, flavor-packed desserts. While many of the desserts are adaptations of early pioneer recipes, Southerners have made them uniquely their own.

Bread Pudding

Its origins can be traced back to the 11th century, when cooks were looking for a way to use up stale bread, and it is now popular in many regions of the world, including the United States’ Southern states. The pudding includes leftover bread soaked in a custard mixture as well as mix-ins such as raisins or other fruit, which are all cooked together.

Lemon Icebox Pie

When the phrase ‘icebox’ appears in a recipe, you know it’ll be a delicious summery treat with little to no baking. Lemon icebox pie is one of those wonderful sweets that can often be made without using a heated oven. This pie, like key lime pie, has a zesty lemon filling made with lemon juice and additional components including condensed milk, cream cheese, and egg yolks, however the exact ingredients vary depending on the recipe.

Peach Cobbler

The warm, sweet cobbler is a delectable treat that goes well with any seasonal fruit, especially Georgia’s luscious peaches. The peach cobbler is a deep-dish sweet delicacy bursting with peaches and topped with some form of crust, the most popular of which is a biscuit topping, derived from early settlers’ recipes. Peach cobbler is best served warm, and it’s commonly topped with vanilla ice cream for a lovely summer treat.

Sweet Potato Pie

Warm hospitality, soul food, and an important music scene are all associated with the South, but for individuals who grew up there, each of these qualities resonates on a deeper level. Sweet potato pie is a dish that is present at times of joy and even loss as comfort food, and it encompasses all three. It’s a delicate, classic dessert with a history built on tenacity and unrecorded recipes that have endured the test of time in any discussion about African American foodways.
