Netizens react to news that Fish & Co. and Delifrance Singapore have lost halal certification

Singapore netizens were all abuzz after The Straits Times broke the news earlier on Tuesday that Fish & Co. and Delifrance Singapore have failed to renew their halal certification.

According to this report, Fish & Co.’s certification expired in March and Delifrance’s, in June. Fish & Co.’s renewal application was rejected by Muis in February because it did not meet the Islamic Religious Council’s Certification conditions. It is currently in the process of amassing all the required documents to get its certification renewed.

As for Delifrance Singapore, it sounds like it has issues convincing the original France-based company, which sells frozen bakery products here as Delifrance Singapore Wholesale, that it should be halal-certified. Muis regulations require all related companies with the same name to be verified as halal before they can be certified.

Both food and beverage businesses have assured the public that despite the lack of halal certification, they are still complying with Muis’s halal standards. “We assure our customers that we would never, in any circumstance, use or sell any non-halal products in our outlets,” Delifrance Singapore’s general manager Alvin Goo was quoted as saying.

The news article did not mention whether business for both food and beverage businesses have been affected since they their halal certifications expired.

But a comment left by a Facebook user on The Straits Times’s Facebook page have triggered a discussion on whether there is a need to obtain the halal certification.
