China’s quirky multi-millionaire, Chen Guangbiao (陈光标) has been making the news lately due to his audacious bid to buy the New York Times Co.
Likely the most influential news publication in the world, the Times current market value is US$2.4 billion.
Hurun’s Rich List of China’s super-wealthy said Chen was worth about US$740 million in 2012.
Reuters called me up last week and interviewed me about my encounter with Chen when he was in Singapore in March last year. I had the privilege to join him for breakfast in a food centre in Bedok and personally witnessed him giving away a few US$100 notes to old folks and cleaners on-the-spot.
His bizarre namecard has been making the run online on various news site like Shanghaiist and Yahoo News.

What do you think of his showy antics when doing charity?
This is the quote I gave to Reuters on Chen Guangbiao which was used: “I don’t know if it’s genuine or just for show, but in the end it’s for a good cause.”
