NeNe Chicken @ The Star Vista

Fans of fried chicken will be delighted to know there is a new kid on the block in Singapore offering Korean-style fried chicken – NeNe Chicken!

Founded in 1999, this Korean restaurant chain has over 1000 stores and counting in South Korea alone.

Their first outlet opened in Singapore about a month back and I was among the first to try it, intrigued by the item names on their menu like “NeNe Pop” and “NeNebap”.

For non-Singaporeans, “NeNe Pop” is the Singapore colloquial equivalent of “titties”.

Interestingly, the names were imported from the Korean menu and were not meant as a marketing gimmick to grab attention. “NeNe” means “Yes Yes” in Korean, so “NeNe Pop” would just be “Yes Yes Pop”, nothing naughty.

The Singapore franchisee definitely knows the names will draw mixed response from Singaporeans, but decided to keep it authentic. Since the brand image is a fun one, the funny names kind of suit the marketing.

It definitely got me interested! Now I can tell my friends I have eaten “NeNe Pop”!

At NeNe Chicken, the chicken parts are only fried upon order to ensure they are fresh and hot. Hence the waiting time can be a little long. Their emphasis is on takeaway orders. For dine-in customers, you may find the interior a little cramp.

I ate at the restaurant and also ordered takeaway. Prices and quality are consistent and I would highly recommend takeaway for a more pleasant dining experience.

The chicken were really good. I highly recommend their Swicy (sweet and spicy) and Black Sesame chicken, both with interesting oriental flavours new to my sampling of fried chicken in Singapore.

Their signature “Shocking Hot” chicken is really as the name suggests. I brushed it off as another gimmick like those KFC Hot Wings that are not really hot and McDonald’s McSpicy that is not really spicy… and as a result, I had to down a full glass of water after a large bite. It is really hot!

There is an opening promotion going on and a meal with two sides, two pieces of chicken and a drink costs just S$7.90. Super great value! Go try it.

NeNe Chicken also does delivery, but only in the west area for now. I hope they will find their way to central Singapore soon so I can make orders.
