The Beef House, located in an old coffeshop called Gar Lok Eating House at 217 Syed Alwi Road serves the best Hakka beef ball noodle, abacus seeds and yong tau foo I have ever tasted at any hawker stalls in Singapore.
It’s not easy to locate the place; Syed Alwi Road is a very long road. A landmark would be that the coffeshop is just opposite the Workers’ Party Headquarter, adding a little political colours. I am pretty sure Low Thia Khiang, Sylvia Lim, Chen Show Mao and the rest of the Workers’ Party cadres must be regular patrons of stall, if not having eaten there at least once before, given the close proximity.
Everything served here are handmade by the stall owners, from the beef balls to all the yong tau foo pieces. That’s what make them so irresistible.
The beef balls are really chewy, with a firm, bouncy texture. The last time I had beef balls this good was in Shantou, China.
The yong tau foo was perfect in everyway, from the noodle to the sauce to the soup base. Rachel is a picky eater when it comes to yong tau foo and even she proclaims its the best she have tasted.
Business is brisk, hence expect to queue. Some signature items like their abacus seeds get sold out very fast, so be there early to avoid disappointment.
Prices are extremely reasonable. Their yong tau foo and beef ball noodles both just cost $3 a serving. My recommendation is to up-size the standard portion or just order both items per pax. With food this good, you can’t be enough. 🙂
