Singapore Police Force: Top 10 Retail Outlets with the Highest Number of Shop Theft Cases in 2010

Via the Singapore Police Force official website, below is a list of the top 10 retail outlets with the highest number of shop theft cases in 2010 in Singapore.

I got to know about this list via an article in Straits Times this morning (14 Mar 2011).

I know everyone loves top ten lists. It is for this reason there are so many top ten charts around like the top ten movies of the week, top ten best selling books of the month and so on. I am guilty of making such lists too with my annual “Alvinology Award” list.

However, I am quite curious why the Singapore Police Force chose to release such a list. Was it to name-and-shame the retailers on the list to beef up their securities? Or was it to let potential thieves know these ten retail outlets are prime targets for shoplifting?

My wife suggested that it was perhaps to tell those uncaught shoplifters – “hey, we know you’ve been coming here, and we’ll be ready for you if you come again”. This certainly made more sense and I hope she is right.

On the other hand, regardless of the police’s intention, how would you interpret the intention of the list as a member of the public? Do leave a comment. 🙂

  1. I agree with your wife’s guess!

I realised that most crimes happened during 3 to 6pm… Probably by students, unemployed people or those not working in the day. That’s just a guess and not pointing specifically to any groups nor particular person. 🙂

  2. Noticed there’s an error on the police website where I screen-grabbed the list from. Here’s the number of recorded incidences via StraitsTimes.com:
