If you’re in the mood for a long, easy dinner built around sharing plates, Carlitos Casa de Comidas is a new spot in the heart of Joo Chiat. The neighbourhood tapas bar brings together chefs Carlos Montobbio of Esquina and Antonio Miscellaneo of La Bottega, with a menu inspired by the casual tapas bars of Barcelona.

We started with La Gilda de Carlitos, a bluefin tuna belly skewer with sundried tomatoes and piparras. It’s a punchy little opener, with rich tuna balanced by the tangy, savoury bite of the other ingredients.

The Gambas al Ajillo paired Atlantic prawns with garlic and chilli oil, served with sourdough for mopping up the sauce. It’s a familiar combination, but a satisfying one, especially if you’re someone who always wants the last bit of garlic oil.

For something from the sea, the Txipirones Bilbao brings together grilled squid, crispy baby squid and squid and shallot orzo. There’s a mix of textures here, from tender squid to a crispier bite, with the orzo making it feel more substantial.

We also tried the Calamar mollete, a mini toasted flatbread sandwich filled with fried squid, squid sofrito and aioli. It’s a compact, moreish bite, with crisp squid and creamy sauce tucked into soft bread.

For a richer plate, the Rabo de Toro features braised beef oxtail with red wine and Manchego potato mash. The slow-braised meat and smooth mash make this a hearty choice to share, especially after the lighter seafood plates.

The Pollo Rustido is free-range chicken served with Catalan rostit vegetables. It brings a roast-dinner feel to the table, with the vegetables adding a homely touch alongside the chicken.

Save room for dessert if you can. The Torrija is made with caramelised brioche, raspberry and chilli compote, and Pedro Ximénez ice cream. The brioche gives it a rich, sweet base, while the raspberry and chilli bring a little fruitiness and gentle heat.

Behind the restaurant, Gaudí Room is a cosy 23-seat speakeasy inspired by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. The room’s curved shadows, mosaic table and wooden bar shelf make it feel like a tucked-away spot to linger over a drink before or after dinner.
