Audrey Hepburn’s timeless appeal took centre stage at Shaw Theatres Lido last weekend, when audiences gathered for a special screening of My Fair Lady, lovingly restored in 4K, as part of the Forever Audrey Hepburn film series.

The event began with a reception featuring tea and light refreshments, including scones, before the screening at 8pm. Adding to the occasion, some guests arrived dressed in outfits inspired by Hepburn and the film’s leading characters, giving the evening a touch of old Hollywood glamour.

For those like me and my guest who have never watched My Fair Lady before, the screening offered an opportunity to discover the classic musical on the big screen. Having watched it for the first time, we found the experience refreshing, with the film’s distinctive style, music and performances making for an enjoyable evening.
Released in 1964, My Fair Lady is adapted from the stage musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, itself based on George Bernard Shaw’s play, Pygmalion. The story follows Professor Henry Higgins, a phonetics expert who takes on the challenge of transforming Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower seller, into a woman who can pass as a member of high society through lessons in speech and etiquette.

The musical features memorable songs such as “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly”, “The Rain in Spain”, “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “Get Me to the Church on Time”. Hepburn plays Eliza Doolittle, while Rex Harrison stars as Professor Henry Higgins.
To add to the nostalgia, old school cinema snacks were sold during the intermission and proved to be a hit with the guests.

The screening also carried a special connection to Singapore’s cinema history. Shaw Theatres Lido was the venue for the film’s original Singapore premiere on 16 December 1964.

The high-profile charity premiere was attended by then Yang di-Pertuan Negara Yusof Ishak and organised by the Y’s Men’s Club to raise funds for the University of Singapore’s cardiovascular laboratory at the General Hospital. The event reportedly raised $30,000 for laboratory equipment, with Shaw chairman Shaw Vee Meng representing the company as host.

The 4K screening is part of Shaw Theatres’ Forever Audrey Hepburn series, which brings three of the actress’s best-known films back to cinemas.
Following My Fair Lady in October, the series continues with Roman Holiday in November and Breakfast at Tiffany’s in December.

Roman Holiday, which features Hepburn in her Oscar-winning breakthrough role as Princess Ann alongside Gregory Peck, is scheduled for 6 and 7 November 2026. Breakfast at Tiffany’s, featuring Hepburn as the iconic Holly Golightly, follows on 4 and 5 December 2026.
For audiences who appreciate classic cinema, the series offers a chance to experience these films on the big screen rather than through home viewing; the right way these classics are to be best enjoyed.
