Group holidays may be a chance for friends to make memories together, but money matters can sometimes put those relationships under pressure. A new YouTrip survey has found that one in three Singaporeans have experienced disputes over travel expenses, while 21% said they would not travel with the same group again.
The survey of 1,000 respondents found that late repayments were the most common trigger for money disagreements, cited by 54% of respondents. This was followed by incorrect calculations at 53% and unfair splitting of expenses at 49%.
Group size also appears to play a role. Travelling groups of six or more were 1.5 times more likely to encounter disagreements over shared expenses compared with groups travelling in pairs.
YouTrip also examined the different roles people take when managing group expenses. Those who typically pay upfront and manage expenses for everyone else were referred to as “accountants”, while those who settle their share after returning from a trip were described as “post trip payers”.
The survey found that 35% of group “accountants” had experienced a money dispute, compared with 30% of “post trip payers”. This suggests that taking responsibility for managing shared expenses may come with additional friction.
For every three group “accountants”, one said they took on the role reluctantly. Among these accountants, 45% spent more than a day settling expenses after returning from a trip.
Reluctant accountants were also four times more likely to say they had ended a friendship over travel expenses. Their biggest concern was having to send awkward payment reminders, cited by 54%. This was followed by the risk of losing personal money because of inaccurate tracking at 53%, and the hassle of sorting through receipts at 47%.
There was also a difference in how people perceived payment reminders. While sending reminders was the top concern among accountants, receiving them ranked as the lowest concern among post trip payers. YouTrip said the difference suggests that asking friends for repayment may feel more uncomfortable to the person making the request than to the person receiving it.
Group travel can also affect personal spending. According to the survey, 88% of respondents admitted to exceeding their personal budgets while travelling in groups.
While 68% attributed overspending to simply “living in the moment”, other respondents pointed to difficulties with managing shared expenses. These included losing track of who paid for what at 37%, the difficulty of tracking expenses in real time at 35%, and the lack of a real time overview of group spending at 30%.
When asked what could improve their group travel experience, 67% wanted a simpler accounting process, while the same percentage wanted to eliminate manual expense tracking. Another 65% said an all-in-one overview of group balances would improve the experience.
To address these issues, YouTrip has introduced YouTrip Split, a feature within its app that allows users to track, split and settle shared expenses during a trip.
Users can create a group, add friends and select transactions directly from their YouTrip transaction history to split. The dedicated group view shows settled and outstanding amounts, keeping shared expenses in one place.
When splitting a transaction, users can divide the amount equally or assign specific amounts, percentages or shares to individual members. The original transaction amount is automatically populated, reducing manual entry. Users can also choose to settle in the original transaction currency or Singapore dollars without having to manually calculate the exchange rate.
YouTrip sends a push notification when a Split is created, informing group members of the shared expense and the amount they need to pay. Members can then settle their share directly through YouTrip without switching to another app.
To mark the launch of YouTrip Split, the company is giving three groups a chance to have their travel expenses covered. From 17 September to 14 October 2026, users who initiate a group split with three or more friends can enter the promotion, with larger groups receiving more entries per split. Participation requires registration through the promotional banner in the YouTrip app.
YouTrip is also running a social media giveaway on Instagram and TikTok. Participants can share their group travel plans or their most chaotic travel moments and tag YouTrip. The five most chaotic or creative submissions will have their split reimbursed.
