From Donkey Kong to PAC-MAN, LEGO Brings the Arcade Era Back to Life

For anyone who grew up spending hours at an arcade, the sight of Donkey Kong, barrels and ladders is likely to bring back some familiar memories. LEGO is tapping into that nostalgia with the LEGO Super Mario Donkey Kong Arcade, a 1,367 piece set designed to recreate the look and feel of the classic arcade game in brick form.

Priced at S$249.90 in Singapore, the set is aimed at adult builders aged 18 and above. It recreates an arcade level inspired by the original Donkey Kong game, complete with the familiar scaffold, ladders, barrels and hammer.

The completed model also features three characters, Jumpman, Donkey Kong and Lady.

What makes the set particularly appealing is that it is not simply designed to sit on a shelf. LEGO has incorporated several interactive elements into the build. A lever allows Donkey Kong to throw barrels one after another, while a joystick can be used to move Jumpman across the level. A button lets builders make him jump, recreating some of the action associated with the original arcade game.

LEGO says the mechanism is designed to circulate the barrels in a continuous loop, adding a playful element to the finished display.

I have a personal reason for finding this set particularly appealing. Donkey Kong was one of the games I grew up playing, so building this model brought back plenty of memories of the arcade era. There is something quite satisfying about seeing a game that once existed as a large arcade cabinet being reinterpreted through LEGO bricks.

The nostalgia also extends into the next generation in my family.

My son still plays Donkey Kong games on his Nintendo Switch, which makes this more than just a retro display piece for me. Building it together becomes an opportunity to share something from my childhood with him while connecting it to the games he enjoys today. It is an example of how LEGO’s adult focused sets can work as a bridge between generations rather than simply being collectibles for older fans.

The Donkey Kong Arcade is also part of a wider selection of LEGO arcade inspired sets that recreate other familiar gaming experiences.

One of the earlier releases is the LEGO Icons PAC-MAN Arcade (S$389.90), which recreates the classic 1980s maze chase arcade cabinet.

The 2,651 piece set features a four way joystick, an illuminated coin slot and a mechanical maze that simulates the movement of PAC-MAN and the ghosts. The cabinet also includes a small 1980s arcade scene and display figures of PAC-MAN, BLINKY and CLYDE.

Another addition to the collection is the LEGO Icons Arcade Pinball Machine, a newer 2,274 piece set priced at S$299.90 in Singapore.

Unlike the Donkey Kong and PAC-MAN models, this one is designed as a working brick built pinball machine.

It features a spring powered launcher, flippers, spinning bumpers and an up and over ramp, with a LEGO Space theme incorporated into the design. The set also includes astronaut and baby astronaut minifigures, plus a spare ball.

Together, the sets offer different interpretations of arcade nostalgia.

The PAC-MAN Arcade focuses on the visual identity and mechanical workings of a classic arcade cabinet, while the Pinball Machine brings physical gameplay into the LEGO model. The Donkey Kong Arcade sits somewhere in between, combining a recognisable game scene with simple interactive functions.

For me, however, the Donkey Kong Arcade has the strongest personal appeal because it connects two generations of gaming in my family. I remember playing Donkey Kong as a child, while my son experiences the character through modern Nintendo games. Sitting down to build the LEGO version together gives us a shared activity that brings those different gaming eras into the same room.
