Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar has never been a conventional musical. More than five decades after it first emerged as a concept album, the rock opera continues to challenge expectations about how the final days of Jesus Christ can be portrayed on stage. Now showing in Singapore, the latest production takes that idea even further, presenting the story less like a traditional Biblical drama and more like an intense rock concert driven by powerful vocals, physical choreography and contemporary staging.

Presented by Base Entertainment Asia, the Olivier Award-winning production directed by Timothy Sheader is currently playing at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands. Originally staged at London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, the production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. It features choreography by Drew McOnie, designs by Tom Scutt, lighting by Lee Curran, sound design by Nick Lidster and music supervision by Tom Deering.

Note that the Singapore run carries a NC16 rating, with the authorities noting mature content and religious sensitivities. The production also makes clear that it is intended for entertainment and is not a biblically accurate representation of Jesus Christ’s life.

With the religious sensitivties out of the way, let’s examine the show as a theatre production designed purely to entertain.

Rather than attempting to recreate ancient Jerusalem, this version places the characters in a stripped-back, industrial world of scaffolding, lighting structures, cables and contemporary costumes. Jesus is presented less as the traditional robed religious figure and more like a charismatic rock star surrounded by an increasingly obsessive following. The production uses this contemporary visual language to explore themes of fame, influence, loyalty, betrayal and the pressure that comes with becoming an icon.

The staging is one of the show’s strengths because it does not rely on elaborate scenery to create spectacle. Instead, relatively simple objects and structures are repeatedly transformed through movement, lighting and performance. A cross-shaped platform becomes different things throughout the production, while ordinary-looking props take on new significance as the story progresses.

The ensemble is equally important to the overall experience. Their choreography is consistently tight and synchronised, with the company maintaining impressive physical precision throughout the musical. Drew McOnie’s choreography gives the ensemble a demanding physical role, and they move between being followers, fans, disciples and an increasingly volatile crowd with remarkable ease.

There is also a clear sense of physical stamina required from the performers. The choreography frequently demands sharp, repetitive movements and intense bursts of energy, giving the production the atmosphere of a live concert.

The biggest strength of the production, however, is its cast.

All the lead performers deliver strongly in their respective roles, with the vocal performances being particularly impressive. Jesus Christ Superstar is not an easy musical to sing. The score requires considerable range, stamina and emotional control, and the cast consistently delivers.

American actor Javon King makes a particularly strong impression as Judas. His performance gives the character a restless energy from the beginning, particularly in Heaven on Their Minds, establishing Judas as someone who is increasingly alarmed by the attention surrounding Jesus. Rather than portraying him simply as a villain, the production gives him a sense of frustration and conflict. His concern about where Jesus’ growing popularity may lead feels genuine, even as his decisions ultimately contribute to the tragedy.

British actor Luke Street takes on Jesus and brings another strong vocal performance to the production. His character gradually moves from a charismatic and youthful figure surrounded by admirers to someone increasingly exhausted by the expectations placed upon him. That emotional transformation becomes especially powerful during Gethsemane, arguably one of the most impressive solo moments of the entire production.

The song is already one of the most demanding numbers in the Jesus Christ Superstar repertoire, but the staging elevates it further. The lighting becomes an essential part of the performance, isolating Jesus and creating a sense of vastness and vulnerability around him.

The Singapore production also gives local talent an important place in the international cast. Tabitha Nauser and Frances Lee share the role of Mary Magdalene, with different performers appearing on different dates.

The performance we watched featured Tabitha Nauser as Mary Magdalene, and she had a solid presence in the production. Nauser brings a confident and polished stage presence to the role. This approach is particularly effective in I Don’t Know How to Love Him. Nauser does not turn the song into an oversized vocal showcase. Instead, she gives it a sense of uncertainty and tenderness, reflecting Mary’s difficulty in understanding her feelings towards Jesus.

The role is shared with Frances Lee, whose interpretation has been noted for taking a more theatrical and expressive approach.

The rest of the cast also holds up well. Grant Hodges brings considerable authority to Caiaphas, while the supporting performers contribute to the production’s strong vocal ensemble. The overall standard of singing is consistently high, which is crucial for a musical where the narrative is delivered almost entirely through song.

The score itself remains one of the biggest reasons the musical has endured. Songs such as I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Gethsemane and Superstar remain instantly recognisable, with this production gives them a contemporary concert-like treatment. The gentleman seated beside me was able to hum through all the familiar songs.

The production’s contemporary aesthetic also reinforces its central theme. Jesus becomes a superstar because of the crowd around him. His followers help build his celebrity, but the same crowd can turn against him. Judas recognises the danger but becomes consumed by his own response to it. The story therefore becomes less about presenting a religious lesson and more about examining what happens when fame, belief, loyalty and human weakness collide.

That makes Jesus Christ Superstar surprisingly relevant even for audiences who are not particularly familiar with the Biblical story.

It is also worth noting that the production is not intended to be a literal account of the life of Jesus. The musical has always taken artistic liberties with the source material, and this staging embraces that freedom rather than trying to disguise it. The result is a stylised theatrical interpretation that uses rock music and contemporary performance language to explore familiar characters from a different perspective.

For us, the combination of the strong lead performances, impressive ensemble choreography and clever staging makes this a production worth catching. Overall, Jesus Christ Superstar succeeds because it commits fully to its identity. It is not trying to be a traditional religious pageant, nor is it simply a concert with a story attached. It sits somewhere between rock concert, musical theatre and contemporary drama, using all three forms to tell a familiar story from an unconventional point of view.

The result is energetic, vocally demanding and visually striking. For a musical written more than 50 years ago, it still has plenty of electricity on stage.
