The Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) has unveiled Spring Melodies of the Lion City, its first Chinese New Year album since 2015 and its first album release since Charms of Nanyang III in 2023. Marking a significant milestone for the orchestra, the digital album presents a contemporary take on traditional Chinese New Year music, blending original local compositions with imaginative new arrangements of familiar festive classics.
Through uplifting and accessible music, Spring Melodies of the Lion City aims to promote Chinese culture while celebrating Singapore’s multicultural identity. The album reimagines the sounds of the festive season through a distinctly local lens, offering both tradition and innovation in equal measure.
A key highlight of the album is the inclusion of three newly commissioned works by Singapore-based composers, each offering a unique musical interpretation of spring, renewal and celebration.
Spring in the Lion City by Phang Kok Jun is written in a loose theme-and-variations form, drawing inspiration from plants and flowers commonly seen in Singaporean homes and public spaces during Chinese New Year, such as kumquats, orchids and lucky bamboo. The work premiered on 17 January 2025 at SCO’s Rhapsodies of Spring 2025 concert.
Spring Returns SG by Dayn Ng Chee Yao is a lively and energetic composition that blends Chinese, Malay, Indian and contemporary funk influences. Based on the well-known Chinese New Year song The Earth Rejuvenates in Spring, the piece reimagines the original major-scale melody using a Malay minor scale, reflecting Singapore’s rich and diverse musical soundscape.
Spring Love by Sulwyn Lok offers a softer and more reflective take on the season. Loosely inspired by the classic Dance of the Golden Snake, the lighthearted, bossa nova-influenced work brings a gentle and modern sensibility to Chinese New Year celebrations.
In addition to original compositions, the album features refreshed arrangements of beloved Chinese New Year tunes. Highlights include Gongxi Gongxi, featuring vocals by DJs Sheng Yang, Qiqi, Jian Bin, Lin Xuan, Wei Ying and Kharissa from Mediacorp Capital 958. Originally written in a minor key to commemorate the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the song takes on renewed meaning in its festive reinterpretation.
Other familiar favourites such as Romantic Encounter and Full of Joy also receive updated arrangements, offering listeners a fresh yet nostalgic listening experience.
Beyond festive celebrations, Spring Melodies of the Lion City plays a role in strengthening SCO’s cultural presence by reaching wider audiences, including corporate partners, commercial spaces and media platforms such as radio stations. The album forms part of SCO’s broader efforts to engage donors, sponsors and the community through emotionally resonant and accessible festive music.
The album will be available for free from 30 January 2026 across 18 music streaming platforms, including Spotify and YouTube Music. Individual tracks and the full album will also be accessible via the music libraries on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok worldwide, searchable by the album title or individual song names.
