[Movie Review] Thunderbolts* (2025): Marvel’s Gritty Anti-Hero Squad Lands in Southeast Asia With a Fresh, Edgy Take on Past Avengers Movies

Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* hits Singapore cinemas on May 2, 2025, marking the climactic finale of the MCU’s Phase Five. With an ensemble cast led by Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan, this gritty anti-hero team-up delivers a refreshing take on the increasingly tired superhero genre.

Thunderbolts* feels more grounded and emotionally resonant, bringing a breath of fresh air.

For those of us in Southeast Asia, it also features Malaysia’s iconic Meredaka 118 skyscraper prominently in the plot, something that would be interesting to catch on the big screen.

Directed by Jake Schreier (Beef), Thunderbolts* assembles a misfit crew of morally ambiguous characters: Yelena Belova (Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Stan), Red Guardian (Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and newcomer Sentry (Lewis Pullman).

Rather than saving the world out of altruism, these characters are coerced into a mission orchestrated by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). The film leans into themes of trauma, redemption, and identity, adding emotional depth with a solid, character-driven storytelling.

Florence Pugh’s portrayal of Yelena Belova stands out, bringing nuance and vulnerability to the role. Sebastian Stan, delivers a compelling performance as well as a weary Bucky Barnes (Winter Solider).

In a surprise for a MCU locale, Thunderbolts features Kuala Lumpur’s Merdeka 118, the world’s second-tallest building, as a prominent set piece. Without giving away too much, Florence Pugh performed a practical stunt, leaping from the skyscraper.

On a whole, Thunderbolts* reinvigorates the MCU by embracing its darker, more introspective side.

With strong performances, especially from Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan, and a narrative that balances action with emotional depth, the film adds a unique flavour that distinguishes it from its recent predecessors.

If you are seeking a superhero film that breaks the mold, Thunderbolts* is worth the watch. Go catch it if you like rooting for the underdogs and the unlikely heroes.

Easter Eggs and Future Teaser (Spoilers)

The film’s post-credits scene offers intriguing hints about the MCU’s future. The Thunderbolts, facing legal challenges over the “Avengers” name, humorously consider rebranding as the “New Avengerz.” The scene culminates with the arrival of the Fantastic Four’s ship entering Earth’s atmosphere, setting the stage for upcoming narratives.

Additionally, Lewis Pullman’s character, Sentry, grapples with his dual identity as the hero and his darker alter-ego, the Void. This internal conflict adds complexity to the character and hints at deeper explorations in future films.
