Spring in Hong Kong is a vibrant season of festivals, and the Cheung Chau Bun Festival is the crown jewel that kicks it all off. Taking place from 5–6 May 2025 on the quaint island of Cheung Chau, this one-of-a-kind celebration transforms a sleepy fishing village into a lively showcase of colour, heritage, and festive cheer.
Recognised on China’s National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2011, the Bun Festival honours the sea god Pak Tai with Taoist rituals, parades, and the iconic midnight bun-scrambling competition. It’s a time when folklore comes alive—and visitors flock to witness the magic.
Cheung Chau Highlights

- Climbing Carnival – 27 April (12pm–6pm): A fun-filled prelude featuring bun tower games, live performances, and family-friendly stalls.
- Piu Sik Parade – 5 May: Watch children “float” above the crowds dressed as deities and pop culture icons in this gravity-defying spectacle.
- Bun-Scrambling Competition – Midnight, 5–6 May: Twelve climbers scale a 14-metre bun tower, racing to grab as many lucky buns as possible—some worth more points the higher they’re placed.
Citywide Festivities Beyond Cheung Chau
The Bun Festival coincides with Hong Kong’s Labour Day Golden Week (1–5 May), amplifying the festive vibe with a spectacular 12-minute drone show on 1 May at 8pm. Set to original music and backed by the city skyline, the best viewing spot is the Wan Chai Temporary Promenade.
