The Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) is showcasing the vibrancy of Singaporean design this June with the return of #SGFASHIONNOW: Runway Singapore and the debut of its first contemporary jewellery display, #SGJEWELLERYNOW. These exhibitions are part of ACM’s ongoing efforts to develop a Singapore design collection that celebrates the exceptional craftsmanship and multicultural heritage of the region. Both exhibitions are now open to the public.
#SGFASHIONNOW Returns to Singapore with its Largest Edition Yet
After a successful premiere in Busan and Seoul in 2023, #SGFASHIONNOW: Runway Singapore is back home, presenting its largest edition yet. Held in the Contemporary Gallery, this showcase features works by 28 established and emerging designers. It is part of an ongoing partnership with LASALLE College of the Arts’ School of Fashion and is co-curated with its fashion students. Since its debut in 2021, #SGFASHIONNOW has become a significant platform for expressing the diversity and potential of local fashion design.
The exhibition highlights a range of stunning garments centered around themes of craftsmanship, innovation in tradition, and urban styles. Notable pieces include a Kebaya Jacket and Circle Skirt from Ans.Ein’s collection for Singapore Stories 2023, a fashion initiative by the Singapore Fashion Council. The showcase revisits works by internationally acclaimed Singapore fashion designers such as Andrew Gn, Thomas Wee, and Ashley Isham, while celebrating contemporary creatives like LINAOTH and Youths in Balaclava. It also spotlights winners of Singapore Stories 2021 and 2022, Jon Max Goh and Kavita Thulasidas, and features a unique look by Baëlf Design.
The displays are thoughtfully designed using repurposed materials from past exhibitions, reflecting ACM’s commitment to sustainability. The exhibition will be accompanied by a talk on Singapore fashion and urban identity, and a catalogue featuring works from the 2021 to 2023 editions will be published in late July 2024.
#SGJEWELLERYNOW: ACM Deepens Its Foray into Design with Contemporary Jewellery
Expanding its design focus beyond fashion, ACM introduces #SGJEWELLERYNOW, its first-ever contemporary jewellery display. This unique exhibition, staged as an intervention in the Jewellery Gallery on Level 3, highlights works by three notable Singaporean jewellery designers and houses: Edmond Chin, State Property, and Foundation Jewellers. These pieces reinterpret Southeast Asian heritage, showcasing Singapore’s cross-cultural influences and remarkable craftsmanship.
