Uncover the Mystique and Charm of Changi with the National Heritage Board’s Newest Heritage Trail

Changi, renowned for its serene coastal atmosphere and world-famous airport, holds a hidden history waiting to be explored. Delving beneath its tranquil facade, the National Heritage Board (NHB) unveils the Changi Heritage Trail, offering a fascinating journey through the rich tapestry of Changi’s past.

Featuring 23 heritage sites and six trail markers, the Changi Heritage Trail invites visitors to delve into the area’s multifaceted history, tracing its evolution across different eras and uncovering its cultural, social, economic, and military heritage. From the resilient spirit of prisoners of war during the Japanese Occupation to the vibrant cultural tapestry of the kampongs, the trail promises to illuminate Changi’s diverse narratives.

At the heart of the trail lies the Coastal Lifestyle, where fishing and maritime activities shaped the economy and culture of Changi’s kampongs. Delve into the deep-seated traditions of coastal foraging and lime-based whitewash making, passed down through generations, as fishermen ventured out to sea under the cover of dusk, bringing life to the villages upon their return.

Transitioning to Leisure in Changi, visitors will discover the area’s transformation into a colonial leisure destination, celebrated for its quiet beaches and cool sea breeze. From its colonial heyday as “Singapore’s Lido” to the construction of picturesque bungalows that drew holidaymakers, Changi’s allure as a resort spot flourished.

Yet, Changi’s history extends beyond leisure, evolving into a strategic military and penal hub. From the establishment of the Changi Cantonment in the 1920s to the construction of Changi Prison in response to overcrowded conditions, Changi played a pivotal role in Singapore’s defense and incarceration during the tumultuous years of the early 20th century.

To cater to the diverse interests of visitors, the Changi Heritage Trail offers three thematic routes: Bungalows and Beaches in Changi, War and Peace in Changi, and Gateways and Communities in Changi. Each route provides a unique perspective on Changi’s history, from its colonial past to its military significance.

The Changi Heritage Trail’s companion guide and map are available for download, with printed copies available at select locations. Discover the untold stories and hidden treasures of Changi as you embark on a journey through its captivating heritage.
