Isn’t it great that Singapore is often the hub where events like this are hosted in Asia?
As part of the celebration of G-Shock’s 30th Anniversary, Casio Computer Co Ltd opens the first G-Shock concept store in Asia at Plaza Singapura on 28 November. The concept store, aptly named “G-SHOCK”, differs from other Casio G-Factory stores, as it will be dedicated to house only watches under the namesake brand and its sister brand, Baby-G.
I have been collecting G-Shock and Baby-G watches since I was a teen and this is really exciting news, with Singapore being the first country in Asia to have such a concept store. Moreover, it is conveniently located at Plaza Singapura.
“As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary, we seek to take the G-Shock brand closer to our fans and enhance consumers’ shopping experience with this one-of-its-kind concept store that focuses on G-Shock, Baby-G and exclusive commemorative models,” said Mr Watanabe Shunichi, Managing Director of Casio Singapore Pte Ltd.
Designed to immerse shoppers in a holistic experience of the G-Shock brand identity of “Absolute Toughness”, the new G-Shock concept store features a black corrugated metal exterior, rigid concrete blocks that line the walls and brown wood flooring to form a rugged and industrial atelier:
With the key intention of showcasing G-Shock and Baby-G in their full glory, the 382 square feet store is divided into a “Master of G” corner and a “Baby-G” corner. Each space is designed to reflect the key qualities of the watches.
I was there at the official store opening. Here are some of the photos from the event:
Limited Edition Collaboration G-Shock Watches In Celebration Of The Opening
To celebrate this milestone store opening, Casio has collaborated with AOS, a 6-man DJ/Emcee Collective comprising three of The Butter Factory Resident DJs Andrew T, Dave Does & Stanley and three international talents T.T, Hapa & N’fa, and The Killer Gerbil, alter ego of local visual artist Luthfi Mustafah, who is recognised for his street art, to launch two limited edition G-Shock watches.
The G-8900A, designed by AOS, features a sound wave motif that resonates the power of music, expresses the collective’s creativity as music makers and party starters and represents the group’s passion for their profession:
“We are pleased to collaborate with G-Shock to create a statement piece that encapsulates the commonalities that G-Shock and AOS share. We drew our inspiration for the sound wave design from a tattoo on a man whom we met at the airport enroute to KL,” shared Andrew T.
The GD-100 collaboration model, designed by The Killer Gerbil, stands out from the classic G-Shock with its liberal use of colours against a black watch body, featuring a coloured illustration of the Killer Gerbil over the length of the lower watch strap, a blue motif with the character’s name and text in graffiti font, representative of the artist’s forte:
“The Killer Gerbil G-Shock is inspired by the adrenaline rush of fixed gear riding with no brakes and therefore adopts the minimalist concept of the fixed gear bicycles where there are no brakes or gear cables running on the frames. The Killer Gerbil character and graffiti styled illustrations and elements also add a unique touch of design and identity to the watch,” said Luthfi Mustafah.
As the first and only store in the region devoted to the G-Shock, the new store joins Casio’s nine existing G-Factory outlets in Singapore to house all G-Shock watches as well as the brand’s limited edition collaborative models.
G-SHOCK Opening Celebration Promotion
To celebrate the opening of G-SHOCK, shoppers who spend a minimum of $130.00 in the new store will receive a limited edition G-Shock cap, while stocks last.
The G-SHOCK concept store is located at #03-63, Plaza Singapura; opening hours are 10.00am to 10.00pm daily.
The GD-100 by The Killer Gerbil is now available in store, while the G-8900A by AOS will be available from December 2012 onwards. Both watches retail at S$209.00 each and will be sold exclusively at the G-Shock concept store.
Upcoming G-Shock Design Competition in January 2013
In conjunction with G-Shock’s 30th Anniversary and the watch’s Shock The World celebrations next year, Casio will be organising a G-Shock design competition, where G-Shock enthusiasts can try their hands at creating a unique watch design of their own and stand to win attractive prizes. More details will be revealed on the Casio Facebook Fanpage at a later date.
